A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

On 24 August 2022, the day marking Ukraine's 31st anniversary of its independence, the United States announced another approximate $3 billion in additional security assistance for Ukraine under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI). The UK Ministry of Defence reported that, today marked the 31st anniversary of Ukraine's independence. Since 2014 President Putin has sought to use a mix of force and coercive diplomacy to increase and solidify Russia's influence in Ukraine and interfere in its sovereign affairs. Russia launched a full invasion of Ukraine six months ago, with the aim of toppling the government and occupying most of the country. By April, Russia's leaders realised this had failed, and reverted to more modest objectives in eastern and southern Ukraine.

The Donbas offensive is making minimal progress and Russia anticipates a major Ukrainian counterattack. Operationally, Russia is suffering from shortages of munitions, vehicles and personnel. Morale is poor in many parts of its military and its army is significantly degraded. Its diplomatic power has been diminished and its long-term economic outlook is bleak. Six months in and Russia's war has proven both costly and strategically harmful.

At the same time, west of Donetsk, the People's Militia is methodically clearing Ukrainian positions, seeking to minimize their own losses. Drones are widely used in this process. Thus, video evidence of the defeat of the Ukrainian Stugna complex and closed positions by the Somali battalion appeared on the Web .

In the meantime, the Banner of Victory has been raised in Peski, the NM of the DPR declares. Moreover, a symbolic place was chosen for the flagpole - above the former Ukrainian position, which the defenders themselves referred to as the "Reichstag".
