A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that, as a result of a Ukrainian strike against a Russian ammunition train in Kherson oblast, southern Ukraine, it is highly unlikely the rail link connecting Kherson with Crimea remains operational. Russian forces are likely to repair the railway line within a few days, although it will remain a vulnerability for Russia forces and their logistical resupply route from Crimea into Kherson.

Russia has promoted the ferry crossing recently established to replace the damaged Antonovsky Bridge over the Dnipro river in Kherson as for civilian use, however Russian military forces will almost certainly utilise it for troop movements and logistical resupply.

It is likely that we will see an increase in civilians attempting to flee Kherson and the surrounding area as hostilities continue and food shortages worsen. This will create pressure on transport nodes and routes, likely resulting in measures to control movement being implemented.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported no major changes on the Volyn, Polissya, and Siversky directions. On the Siversky, Russian forces shelled the areas of Seredyna Buda, Ryzhivka and Zhuravka settlements of the Sumy 0blast with barrel artillery.

All the while, Russian forces have continued to conduct UAV aerial reconnaissance.

In the waters of the Black Sea, two Kalibr sea-based cruise missile carriers are in readiness for the use of high-precision weapons.

The threat of missile strikes on military facilities and critical infrastructure facilities on the territory of Ukraine remains.

Russian forces are demoralized by the total resistance of the Ukrainian people. It is becoming more and more difficult for the Russian command to replenish the units that suffer losses in the senseless war it has unleashed. Russian propaganda continues to lie, inventing non-existent victories and covering up the crimes of its army and mercenaries.

According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, in the city of Radekhiv, Lviv region, a warehouse of foreign weapons brought to Ukraine through Poland was destroyed. In total, over the past day, three command posts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) were destroyed, incl. 72nd and 65th brigades in Vesela Dolina and Yulyevka. At the same time, four ammunition depots and a fuel storage facility were hit in the Mykolaiv region and the Kyiv-controlled part of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR).

Artillery and aviation of the Russian Armed Forces covered 133 enemy concentration areas, and air defense systems shot down five drones of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and two Tochka-U missiles over Chernobaevka over the liberated territories.

In Nortsovka, units of the Ukrainian 132nd reconnaissance battalion, which suffered heavy losses as a result of artillery actions, refused to obey the orders of the command and retreated beyond the Seversky Donets.
