Russo-Ukraine War - 28 August 2022 - Day 186
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that, on 25 August 2022, the Russian Presidential Administration issued a presidential decree increasing the established strength of the Russian armed forces to 1,150,628, an increase of nearly 140,000. The government was instructed to provide funding to achieve this.
It remains unclear whether Russia will attempt to fill this increased allocation from recruiting more volunteer 'contract' soldiers, or from increasing the annual targets for the conscription draft. In any case, under the legislation currently in place, the decree is unlikely to make substantive progress towards increasing Russia's combat power in Ukraine. This is because Russia has lost tens of thousands of troops; very few new contract servicemen are being recruited; and conscripts are technically not obliged to serve outside of Russian territory.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russian forces continue to focus on establishing full control over the territory of Donetsk oblast, the maintenance of captured areas of Kherson, part of Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia and Mykolaiv oblasts. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that Russian troops stopped another attack on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. Air defense forces shot down a Ukrainian kamikaze drone. Based on its flight path, the military concluded that the target was a spent nuclear fuel storage facility. This was reported to RIA Novosti by the administration of Energodar. The drone crashed on the roof of the special building of the nuclear power plant, while no damage or casualties were noted.
Previously, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) opened artillery fire on the station twice, nine shells fell in the area of a special building with nuclear fuel reserves and a storage of radioactive waste. As a result of the attack, the pipeline line received some damage.
In addition, Novaya Kakhovka in the Zaporozhye region was subjected to massive shelling , where a fire broke out due to ammunition hits. During the day, Ukrainian nationalists opened fire on the city and the local hydroelectric power station four times from American HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems and Tochka-U tactical missile systems, firing about 20 shells. Some of them intercepted air defense, but some reached the goal. The fire has now been extinguished and no one was seriously injured.
Russian troops respond to all the provocations of the Kyiv regime with the systematic destruction of military facilities and enemy strongholds.
