Russo-Ukraine War - 17 August 2022 - Day 175
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
Russia's Defense Ministry said in a statement that a temporary ammunition storage unit near the town of Dzhankoy, northern Crimea had exploded on 16 August 2022. It later clarified that, "as a result of sabotage, a military warehouse near the village of Dzhankoy was damaged. A number of civilian facilities, including power lines, a power plant, a railway track, as well as a number of residential buildings, were damaged." Ukraine did not claim responsibility for the blast, although Ukrainian presidential advisor Mykhailo Podolyak hinted at a potential Ukrainian role in a tweet: "Crimea occupied by Russians is about warehouses, explosions and high risk of death for invaders and thieves. Demilitarization in action."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told people to avoid areas where Russian forces store ammunition and equipment, stating that "[t]he reasons for the explosions in the occupied territory can be different, very different, (...) But they all have the same meaning: the destruction of the occupiers' logistics, their ammunition, military and other equipment, command posts saves the lives of our people."
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that, on 16 August 2022, both Russian and Ukrainian officials acknowledged that an ammunition dump had exploded near Dzhankoi in northern Crimea, where a nearby railway and electricity sub-station were also likely damaged. Dzhankoi and Gvardeyskoye are home to two of the most important Russian military airfields in Crimea. Dzhankoi is also a key road and rail junction that plays an important role in supplying Russia's operations in southern Ukraine.
The cause of these incidents and the extent of the damage is not yet clear but Russian commanders will highly likely be increasingly concerned with the apparent deterioration in security across Crimea, which functions as rear base area for the occupation.
