The S-300PMU1 is an extended range version of S-300PMU with a limited anti-ballistic missile capability, including capabilities against aerodynamic targets with speeds up to 3 kilometers/second. The S-300 PMU1 mobile multichannel air defence missile system can defeat modem and future aircrafts, strategic cruise missiles, tactical battlefield ballistic missiles and other targets with a reflection surface up to 0.02 sq. m. flying at speeds up to 2.800 m/s in massive enemy air raids and heavy clutter and severe ECM environments. This system was developed from S-300 PMU and differs from it by improved technical and operational characteristics. These improvements were achieved owing to incorporation of new engineering innovations in the S-300 PMU, based on many years of experience gained during its operation and perfection of mathematical support, using state-of-the-art computer aids.

The S-300 PMU-1 mobile multi-channel anti-aircraft missile system is designed to defend military and industrial facilities from massive strikes of air attack weapons, as well as to create the country's air defense lines. The system provides for the defeat of modern and promising aircraft, cruise missiles, ballistic targets and other means of air attack, flying at altitudes from 10 m to the practical ceiling of their combat use under conditions of intensive opposition.

The S-300 PMU-1 anti-aircraft missile system includes 83M63E controls and 8 self-propelled launchers (SPU). Self-propelled launchers are available in two versions: 5P85TE - semi-trailer on a three-axle vehicle "KrAZ-260" and 5P85CE on a four-axle vehicle "MAZ-547" or "MAZ-543M".

The anti-aircraft missile system has a short response time, a high degree of automation of the processes of combat work and high fire performance. It can simultaneously fire up to six targets with up to two missiles aimed at each target, which sharply reduces the targets ability to avoid defeat by completing an anti-missile maneuver. Without prior preparation of the position of funds can be deployed in 5 minutes.

A multifunctional radar station for illumination and targeting, consisting of an antenna post and a hardware container mounted on a single wheeled chassis, provides for the search and acquisition of targets for automatic tracking and missile guidance, including in conditions of intensive radio-resistance. The antenna device of the radar station consists of phased antenna arrays with digital control of the beam position. To increase the range of detection and firing of targets at extremely low altitudes, as well as when deploying an anti-aircraft missile system in a wooded or highly rugged terrain, the antenna post can be installed on a special mobile tower. Operator's workstations are located in the hardware container. multiprocessor computer and built-in functional control equipment. There are comfortable working conditions necessary for the conduct of round-the-clock combat duty. The radar of the illumination and the self-propelled launcher are equipped with autonomous power supply sources and radio communication.

The self-propelled launcher has four transport-launchers (TPU) with 48N6E missiles. It provides transportation, storage and launch of the rocket. TPU provides the rocket operation for 10 years, which does not require any checks or adjustments.

The launch of an anti-aircraft missile is vertical; it is carried out by ejecting it from a transport-starting device, with the subsequent switching on of the main engine. Vertical start allows firing at targets flying from any direction without turning the self-propelled launcher. Before launching the main engine, the rocket is thrown out of the container to a height of more than 30 m. When launching and further flying, the rocket has no separable parts.

When a missile is aimed at a target, the principle of tracking the target through the missile defense system is used, when control commands are generated based on data from the multi-purpose radar of illumination and guidance and the on-board direction finder. When a missile is moving toward a target, the missile guidance system uses its own inertial guidance system, radio-correction commands from ground-based controls, and passive radar guidance to reflect the signal from the ground light station. At the final leg of the flight, the rocket is controlled according to the data generated by the active radar homing head. Such a targeting scheme ensures high operational efficiency in a difficult jamming environment and makes rockets more difficult to detect.

The rocket is equipped with a non-contact radioprotector and a high-power fragmentation warhead weighing 140 kg. In the course of autonomous combat operations, the anti-aircraft missile system detects targets in the autonomous search sectors, and can also receive target indications from an attached all-high-level three-axis circular radar station 36D6.

For the development of the complex, its developer Boris Bunkin was awarded the Order for Services to the Faatherland of the 4th degree.
