A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that the Russia-Africa Conference convened in St Petersburg on 27 July 2023, with 17 African heads of state attending, down from 43 at the last iteration. The event takes place ten days after Russia withdrew from the Black Sea Grain Initiative (BSGI).
The BSGI had allowed the export of 30 million tonnes of Ukrainian grain to Africa, providing essential nutrition to states including Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Sudan. As well as the direct disruption of supplies, Russia's blockade of Ukraine is also causing grain prices to rise.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during the day July 28, Russian forces carried out 10x airstrikes and launched 19xMLRS attacks on Ukrainian cities and Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The threat of missile and air strikes remains high across Ukraine.
21x combat clashes took place throughout the day.
Volyn' and Polissya axes: no significant changes detected. There are no signs of the offensive groupings formation.
Sivershchyna and Slobozhanshchyna axes: Russian forces carried out airstrikes at Galaganivka and Leonivka of the Chernihiv Oblast and Iskriskiv and Volfyny of the Sumy Oblast. They shelled with mortars and artillery more than 15x settlements. These are Ivashki, Hur'iv Kozachok, Udy, Strelecha, Zelene and Okhrimivka in the Kharkiv Oblast.
Kup'yans'k axis: Russian forces carried out an air strike at Druzhelyubivka of the Kharkiv Oblast. Kolodyazne, Dvorichna, Zapadne, Sinkivka and Kislivka of the Kharkiv Oblast got under Russian artillery and mortar fire.
Lyman axis: Russian forces carried out an airstrike at Hryhorivka of the Donetsk Oblast. Nevs'ke, Bilogorivka of Luhansk Oblast and Tors'ke, Verkhn'yokam'ians'ke, Spirne of Donetsk Oblast were shelled by artillery.
Bakhmut axis: more than 15x settlements were shelled by artillery, including Minkivka, Bogdanivka, Chasiv Yar, Ivanivs'ke, Predtechine, and Bila Hora of the Donetsk Oblast.
Avdiivka axis: the Russian adversary launched an air strike at Avdiivka. More than 10x settlements, including Avdiivka, Pervomais'ke, and Karlivka in Donetsk Oblast, were shelled by artillery.
Mar'inka axis: the defense forces continue to hold back the advance of Russian troops in the vicinities of Mar'inka. Russian forces shelled more than 10x settlements, including Krasnohorivka, Mar'inka, Novomykhailivka, Pobieda, and Georgiivka in the Donetsk Oblast.
Shakhtars'k axis: the Russian occupiers shelled the settlements of Odradne, Blagodatne, Makarivka, Zelene Pole and Novodarivka of the Donetsk Oblast.
Zaporizhzhia and Kherson axes: Russia is concentrating its main efforts on preventing the further advance of Ukrainian troops. More than 25x settlements, including Chervone, Hulyaipole, Charivne, Novoandriivka, and Stepove of Zaporizhzhya Oblast; Zolota Balka, Mykhailivka, Kozats'ke, Tyaginka, Ivanivka and Sadov in Kherson Oblast were shelled by artillery.
Defense Forces of Ukraine continue offensive operations on the Melitopol' and Berdyansk axes, and are equipping captured positions, open fire with artillery on designated Russian targets, and carry out counter-battery measures.
Due to successful military operations of the Ukrainian Defense Forces and because of Russian significant losses in manpower, the number of refusals to participate in combat operations increased throughout Russian occupation forces. For example, in Rozivka of Zaporizhzhya Oblast, about 60x Russian troops from the 247th Airborne Assault Regiment of the 7th Airborne Assault Division of the Russian armed forces refused to conduct combat operations near the village of Staromayorskoe in Donetsk Oblast. The occupiers even partially disabled their own cars and armored vehicles.
Ukrainian Air Force conducted 3x strikes on Russian manpower concentrations.
Ukrainian missile and artillery units hit 8x artillery units at firing positions, 2x radio electronic warfare stations, an ammunition warehouse, as well as a warehouse of Russian fuel and lubricants.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that the AFU continued to attempt offensive actions in South Donetsk, Krasny Liman and Donetsk directions.
In South Donetsk direction, the enemy continued attempts to break through the defence of Russian troops using armoured and other heavy vehicles.
The AFU with the 47th Mechanised Brigade reinforced with foreign-manufactured tanks have attacked the positions of the 71st Motorised Rifle Regiment of the 42nd Motorised Rifle Division of the 58th Army of the Southern Military District and the 810th Marine Brigade of the Black Sea Fleet close to the Rabotino and Uspenovka settlements of the Zaporozhye region.
The military personnel, showing endurance, perseverance and courage, successfully repelled all the attacks of superior enemy forces.
The enemy losses were up to 180 Ukrainian servicemen, five tanks, including three German-manufactured Leopard and two French-manufactured AMX wheeled tanks, 17 infantry fighting vehicles, two armoured fighting vehicles, one U.S.-manufactured M777 artillery system, and one Strela-10 surface-to-air missile system.
Close to Vremevka salient near Staromayorskoye (Donetsk People's Republic), as a result of active action by units of the Vostok Group of Forces, an attack by an assault detachment of the AFU 35th Marine Brigade has been repelled. A Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group has been destroyed.
The enemy losses were up to 110 Ukrainian servicemen, two infantry fighting vehicles, three armoured fighting vehicles, two motor vehicles, as well as howitzers: D-20, D-30 and Msta-B.
In Krasny Liman direction, four attacks by assault groups of the AFU 67th Mechanised Brigade against the positions of the 228th Motorised Rifle Regiment of the 90th Armoured Division have been repelled close to Chervonaya Dibrova (Luhansk People's Republic).
Assault detachments of the 15th Motorised Rifle Brigade of the 2nd Army continued to develop their success in Svatovo direction and captured a number of AFU strongholds near Sergeevka (Lugansk People's Republic). The advance into the depth of the enemy defence was 1.5 kilometres.
In addition, to the west of Zhitlovka (Lugansk People's Republic), detachments of Shtorm 252nd and 752nd motorised rifle regiments of the 20th Army, using the results of a fire attack, have attacked the enemy and advanced three kilometres deep into the defence.
As a result of skillful use of modern means of destruction by units of the 21st and 35th motorised rifle brigades of 2nd and 41st armies have suppressed enemy manpower and hardware of 25th airborne, 21st and 67th mechanised brigades, the 100th Territorial Defence Brigade and the 5th Operational Brigade of the Ukrainian National Guard close to Torskoye and Yampolovka (Donetsk People's Republic), Novovodyanoye, Chervonaya Dibrova and Kremennaya (Lugansk People's Republic).
The enemy losses were up to 90 Ukrainian servicemen, two infantry fighting vehicles, three armoured fighting vehicles, three motor vehicles, one Gvozdika self-propelled artillery system and one D-30 howitzer.
In Donetsk direction, the defending units of 7th, 9th and 132nd motorised rifle brigades of 1st and 2nd army corps of the Yug Group of Forces, thanks to a skilfully organised system of fire combined with engineering obstacles, have successfully repelled seven attacks by enemy assault detachments of 53rd mechanised, 59th motorised infantry and 81st airmobile brigades close to Belogorovka, Zaitsevo, Pervomaiskoye and Vodyanoye (Donetsk People's Republic).
As a result of actions by aviation and artillery, manpower and hardware of 24th, 28th, 43rd, 110th mechanised, 10th mountain assault, 3rd airborne assault and 77th airmobile brigades of the AFU have been destroyed close to Avdeevka, Konstantinovka, Seversk, Novgorodskoye and Belaya Gora (Donetsk People's Republic).
In addition, the rotation of AFU units has been disrupted by competent reconnaissance actions and a comprehensive fire attack close to Kleshcheevka (Donetsk People's Republic).
The enemy losses were up to 260 Ukrainian servicemen, five infantry fighting vehicles, three armoured fighting vehicles, two pickup trucks, eight motor vehicles, one U.S.-manufactured M777 artillery system, one Akatsiya self-propelled artillery system, and one D-20 howitzer.
In Kupyansk direction, assault detachments of the 7th Motorised Rifle Regiment of the Zapad Group of Forces continued their offensive operations west of Kuzyomovka (Lugansk People's Republic) and, having completed the task of the day, gained advantageous positions.
In addition, as a result of coordinated actions by Operational-Tactical and Army aviation, as well as artillery, units 14th, 32nd mechanised brigades of the AFU and the 103rd Territorial Defence Brigade have been eliminated close to Stelmakhovka (Lugansk People's Republic), Sinkovka and Novoosinovo (Kharkov region).
The enemy losses were up to 30 Ukrainian servicemen, two armoured fighting vehicles, two motor vehicles, one D-30 howitzer, as well as two U.S.-manufacture counter-battery radar stations: AN/TPQ-50 and AN/TPQ-36.
In Kherson direction, the enemy losses were up to 20 Ukrainian servicemen and two motor vehicles.
Operational-Tactical and Army aviation, Missile Troops and Artillery of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation have neutralised 117 AFU artillery units at their firing positions, manpower and hardware in 133 areas.
An enemy rear control point of the Ukrainian group of troops 'Soledar', as well as the field control point of the 10th Army Corps of the AFU have been destroyed close to Druzhkovka (Donetsk People's Republic) and Malaya Tokmachka (Zaporozhye region)
Air defence facilities have shot down two projectiles launched by HIMARS MLRS.
In addition, 17 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles have been intercepted close to Kremennaya (Lugansk People's Republic), Gorlovka, Soledar, Volnovakha, Novobakhmutovka, Nevelskoye (Donetsk People's Republic), Tokmak, Ulyanovsk and Energodar (Zaporozhye region), as well as Alyoshki (Kherson region).
In total, 457 airplanes, 244 helicopters, 5,308 unmanned aerial vehicles, 427 air defence missile systems, 11,010 tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, 1,140 fighting vehicles equipped with MLRS, 5,646 field artillery cannons and mortars, as well as 11,939 special military motor vehicles have been destroyed during the special military operation.
