A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that military formations drawn from across Russia are currently bearing the brunt of Ukraine’s counter offensive.
In Zaporizhzhia Oblast, the 58th Combined Arms Army is defending heavily entrenched lines; normally it secures Russia’s volatile Caucasus region. Around Velyka Novosilka, the 5th Combined Arms Army and Naval Infantry hold the front; they are routinely based 7000km away as a balance to Chinese power.
Around Bakhmut, the defence is now largely formed around airborne regiments normally stationed in western Russia, who normally act as an elite rapid reaction force in case of tensions with NATO. The way Russia is accepting risks across Eurasia highlights how the war has dislocated Russia’s established national strategy.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that that night, the Russian Federation launched missile attacks on Ukraine, using 10x Caliber type missiles, 7x of which were destroyed by anti-air defense units and fighter aircraft, 3x Caliber missiles hit Lviv. As a result of the Russian attacks on Lviv, unfortunately, 5x civilians were killed and more than 35x were injured with various degrees of severity. More than 35x houses, more than 250x apartments, 10x dormitories, an orphanage, two higher education institutions and other civilian buildings were damaged.
During the day July 6, Russian forces carried out 41x airstrikes and 42x MLRS attacks on Ukrainian cities and Ukrainian Armed Forces. Russian army shelled peaceful settlements in the Kherson and Kharkiv Oblasts.
Russia continues to focus its main efforts on the Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Mar’inka axes – 20x combat clashes took place during the day.

There is an ongoing process of transporting russian units to Ukraine, which underwent training at the training grounds of Belarus.

Carried out airstrikes near Karmazynivka and Nevsky in the Luhansk Oblast and Terni, Ivanovka and Fedorivka in Donetsk Oblast. More than 10x settlements were shelled by artillery, such as Nevske and Bilogorivka of Luhansk Oblast and Verkhn’yokam’ians’ke, Berestov Rozdolivka - Donetsk Oblast.
Bakhmut axis: despite heavy fire from the Russian forces' aircraft and artillery, Ukrainian defenders successfully repelled Russian attacks in the Ivanovo and Bila Hora areas. Russian forces carried out an airstrike near Ivanovsky, Donetsk Oblast. Ukrainian Armed Forces continue offensives to the south and north of the city of Bakhmut, and and are digging trenches at the achieved boundaries. More than 15x settlements, including Vasyukivka, Bogdanivka, Ivanivs’ke, Klishchiivka, Oleksandro-Shultine, Bila Hora and Diliivka of the Donetsk Oblast, were shelled by artillery.

Defense Forces of Ukraine continue offensive operations on the Melitopol and Berdyansk axes, are entrenched at the reached boundaries, and shelling with artillery the identified Russian targets, and carry out counter-battery measures.
The Russian occupiers cynically continue to violate the norms of international humanitarian law and use children's institutions in temporarily occupied settlements to accommodate their troops, with the aim of using the civilian population as human shields. Thus, in the settlement of Novopetrivka, Berdyansk district, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, on the territory of the children's sanatorium "Vesna", Russian forces set up a military base, where more than 800x Russian and dispersed Russian military equipment in close proximity to the residential buildings of local residents.
