A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that After a lull during June 2023, over the last seven days Bakhmut has again been the site of some of the most intense fighting along the front.

Ukrainian forces have made steady gains to both the north and south of the Russian-held town. Russian defenders are highly likely struggling with poor morale, a mix of disparate units and a limited ability to find and strike Ukrainian artillery.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during the day July 8, the Russian occupiers launched another air and missile attack on the territory of Ukraine, using anti-aircraft guided missiles from air defense systems S-300 and Iranian strike UAV "Shahed". The Ukrainian Air Defense destroyed 5x strike UAVs of the "Shahed" type. Some of the UAVs hit industrial facilities and infrastructure facilities in Dnipropetrovsk and Kirovohrad Oblasts.

Also, Russian forces carried out 34x air strikes, launched 42x MLRS attacks. In particular, 8x civilians were killed and 13x wounded as a result of shelling by the Russian military at Liman.

The threat of missile and air strikes remains high across Ukraine.

Russia is concentrating its main efforts on the Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Mar'inka axes - more than 25x combat clashes took place during the day.
Volyn' and Polissya axes: no significant changes detected. There are no signs of the formation of offensive groupings. Armed Forces of Belarus perform tasks in the Ukrainian border.
Sivershchyna and Slobozhanshchyna axes: Russian forces maintain an enhanced military presence. They carried out an airstrike in the Vovkivka area of the Sumy Oblast. The Russian adversary shelled wtih mortars and artillery more than 25x settlements, such as Karpovichi, Chernihiv Oblast; Znob-Novgorodske, Bilopylla of the Sumy Oblast and Hatyshche, Vovchans'k, Varvarivka of the Kharkiv Oblast.
Kup'yans'k axis: Russian forces launched an airstrike at Novoyehorivka, Luhansk Oblast. Tried to advance in Berestovogt, Novoselivskyi and Stelmakhivka areas of Luhansk Oblast. Ukrainian soldiers decisively hold their ground, repelling all Russian attacks. Figolivka, Kup'yans'k, Kislivka and Kam'ian'ka of the Kharkiv Oblast were shelled with artillery and mortars.
Lyman axis: Russians attacked during the day and tried to knock out Ukrainian troops from their positions at Veselogt area of the Donetsk Oblast, albeit without success. Carried out airstrikes near Nevs'ke, Luhansk Oblast, and Spiryny, Donetsk Oblast. More than 10x settlements, including Nevs'ke, Belogorivka in the Luhansk Oblast, and Verkhn'yokam'ians'ke and Vesele in the Donetsk Oblast, were shelled by artillery.
Bakhmut axis: the Russian adversary carried out airstrikes near Druzhkivka and Bila Hora. More than 10x settlements, including Bohdanivka, Khromov, Chasiv Yar, Ivanivs'ke of the Donetsk Oblast, were shelled by artillery.
Avdiivka axis: the Russian forces carried out unsuccessful offensives in the vicinities of Novokalynovoy, Stepovoy, Pervomaisky and Nevelsky. Conducted an airstrike at Avdiyivka. Russian forces shelled more than 15x settlements, including Keramik, Avdiivka, Pervomais'ke, and Semenivka in the Donetsk Oblast.
Mar'inka axis: under Russian artillery fire, Ukrainian defenders repelled all Russian attacks in the vicinities of Mar'inka. Russian forces carried out airstrikes near Krasnohorivka and Novomykhailivka, Donetsk Oblast. They shelled Georgiivka, Elizavetivka, Krasnohorivka, Oleksandropil', Mar'inka, and Katerynivka.
Shakhtars'k axis: Russian forces carried out unsuccessful offensives at Blagodatny of the Donetsk Oblast. They also carried out an airstrike there. More than 10x settlements were shelled, such as Novomykhailivka, Vugledar, Zolota Niva and Shakhtars'ke of the Donetsk Oblast.
Zaporizhzhia and Kherson axes: Russian forces are on the defensive, and concentrate their main efforts on preventing the advance of Ukrainian troops. They carried out an airstrike at Kozatsky of the Kherson Oblast. Russian forces shelled more than 20x settlements, including Novodarivka, Levadne, Malynivka, Hulyaipole of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast; Havrylivka, Antonivka, Zolota Balka of the Kherson Oblast; Kherson, Ivanivka and Ochakiv in the Mykolaiv Oblast. Defense Forces of Ukraine continue offensive operations on the Melitopol and Berdyansk axes, and taking defensive positions, while conducting counter-battery maneuvers.

Ukrainian Air Force conducted 7x on Russian manpower concentrations.

Ukrainian missile and artillery units hit 11x artillery units at firing positions, 1x ammunition depot, 3x anti-air defense systems and 2x radio electronic warfare stations.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that the AFU continued to attempt offensive actions in Donetsk, Krasny Liman and South Donetsk directions.

In Donetsk direction, as a result of the competent and courageous actions of the defending units of the Yug Group of Forces, nine enemy attacks have been successfully repelled close to Druzhba, Severnoye, Maryinka, and Pervomaiskoye (Donetsk People's Republic).

In addition, enemy units were hit close to Krasnogorovka, Avdeevka, Veseloye and west of Kleshcheevka (Donetsk People's Republic).

An ammunition depot of HIMARS multiple-launch rocket system projectiles has been destroyed near Mikhailovka (Donetsk People's Republic).

One ordnance depot of 110th Mechanised Brigade of the AFU has been destroyed near Avdeevka (Donetsk People's Republic).

The enemy losses were up to 500 Ukrainian servicemen killed and wounded, three tanks, six armoured fighting vehicles, four motor vehicles, two pickup trucks, two U.S.-manufactured M109 Paladin self-propelled artillery systems, and one D-30 howitzer.

In Krasny Liman direction, as a result of the active actions by the units of the Tsentr Group of Forces, as well as aviation, artillery and heavy firing systems, an enemy attack has been repelled near Torskoye (Donetsk People's Republic).

An AFU manpower and hardware concentration area has been hit close to Chervonaya Dibrova (Lugansk People's Republic) and Serebryanka (Donetsk People's Republic).

The activities of one Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group have been suppressed close to Torskoye (Donetsk People's Republic).

The enemy losses were over 60 Ukrainian personnel, three armoured fighting vehicles, three pickup trucks, and two D-30 howitzer.

In addition, three ammunition depots of the 66th mechanised and 81st airmobile brigades of the AFU have been hit close to Novolyubovka (Lugansk People's Republic) and Serebryanka (Donetsk People's Republic).

In South Donetsk direction, as a result of the active action by aviation, artillery and heavy flamethrower systems of the Vostok Group of Forces, an enemy attack has been repelled and one Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group has been eliminated near Urozhaynoye (Donetsk People's Republic).

In Zaporozhye direction, AFU manpower and hardware concentration areas have been hit near Pyatikhatki and Orekhov (Zaporozhye region).

Two combat reconnaissance actions by AFU units near Marfopol and Rabotino were repelled (Zaporozhye region). In addition, the actions of an Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group have been disrupted close to Dorozhnyanka (Zaporozhye region).

The enemy losses were up to 170 Ukrainian servicemen, three armoured fighting vehicles, three motor vehicles, and one pickup truck.

One French-manufactured Cezar self-propelled howitzer, one U.S.-manufactured M777 artillery system, two Msta-B howitzers, two D-20 guns and one Gvozdika self-propelled artillery system have been also destroyed.

One ordnance depot of the 65th Mechanised Brigade of the AFU has been destroyed near Orekhov (Zaporozhye region).

In Kupyansk direction, the attacks, launched by Operational-Tactical and Army aviation, as well as artillery of the Zapad Group of Forces, have resulted in the neutralisation of manpower and hardware of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near Stelmakhovka, Novosyolovskoye, Artyomovka (Lugansk People's Republic), Sinkovka, Berestovoye, and Dvurechnaya (Kharkov region).

The enemy losses were over 30 Ukrainian servicemen, two motor vehicles and one U.S.-manufactured AN/TPQ-50 counter-battery radar.

In Kherson direction, the enemy losses were up to 40 Ukrainian servicemen, one tank, four motor vehicles and one Gvozdika self-propelled artillery system.

Operational-Tactical and Army aviation, Missile Troops and Artillery of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation have neutralised 102 artillery units of the AFU at their firing positions, manpower and military hardware at 126 areas.

A fuel base for AFU military equipment has been hit close to Zaporozhye.

Air defence facilities have shot down one Su-27 airplane of Ukrainian Air Force near Novogrigorovka (Donetsk People's Republic).

Six HIMARS multiple-launch rocket system projectiles have been intercepted.

In addition, 17 unmanned aerial vehicles have been destroyed close to Verkhnekamenka (Lugansk People's Republic), Maryinka, Volodino (Donetsk People's Republic), Ostrikovka, Shirokoye, Mirnoye (Zaporozhye region), Novaya Mayachka, Novaya Kakhovka, Malokakhovka, Ulyanovka (Kherson region) and Volfino (Sumy region).

In total, 453 airplanes, 241 helicopters, 4,938 unmanned aerial vehicles, 426 air defence missile systems, 10,582 tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, 1,135 fighting vehicles equipped with MLRS, 5,383 field artillery cannons and mortars, as well as 11,512 special military motor vehicles have been destroyed during the special military operation.
