A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that in recent weeks, Russia has prioritised and refined tactics aimed at slowing Ukrainian armoured counter-offensive operations in southern Ukraine.

The core of this approach has been Russia's very heavy use of anti-tank mines. In some areas the density of its minefields indicate that it has likely used many more mines than laid down in its military doctrine. Having slowed the Ukrainian advance, Russia has then attempted to strike Ukrainian armoured vehicles with one-way attack uncrewed aerial vehicles, attack helicopters and artillery.

Although Russia has achieved some success with this approach in the early stages of Ukraine's counter-offensive, its forces continue to suffer from key weaknesses, especially overstretched units and a shortage of artillery munitions.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during the day July 2, Russian forces launched a missile attack on civilians at Pervomaisky city, Kharkiv Oblast. russians carried out 35x airstrikes and launched about 50x MLRS attacks on Ukrainian cities and Ukrainian Armed Forces. As a result of the Russian terrorist attacks, civilians were injured, houses, commercial and administrative buildings, as well as cars were damaged.

The threat of missile and air strikes across Ukraine remains high.

Russia continues to focus its main efforts on the Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Mar'inka axes, heavy battles are raging on. 30x combat clashes took place during the day.
Volyn' and Polissya axes: no significant changes detected. There is no signs of the formation of offensive groupings.
Sivershchyna and Slobozhanshchyna axes: Russian forces during the last day made unsuccessful attempts to penetrate with sabotage group across the state border of Ukraine, but suffered losses and retreated. To cover the retreat, the sabotage group used barrel and rocket artillery. Mortars and artillery shelled more than 15x settlements. More than 10x settlements, in particular, Nevs'ke, Bilogorivka of the Luhansk Oblast and Verkhn'yokam'ians'ke, Berestov, Vesele, Rozdolivka of the Donetsk Oblast, were shelled by artillery.
Bakhmut axis: under heavy fire from Russian forces' aircraft and artillery, Ukrainian defenders successfully repelled Russian attacks near Bohdanivka, Donetsk Oblast. Ukrainian forces continue to carry out offensive operations south and north of the city of Bakhmut, while equipping positions at the achieved boundaries. More than 15x settlements were damaged by artillery. Among them are Vasyukivka, Markove, Bohdanivka, Khromove, Ivanivs'ke, Chasiv Yar, Klishchiivka, Oleksandro-Shultyne, and Northern Donetsk Oblast.

The Defense Forces of Ukraine continue conducting an offensive operations on the Melitopol' and Berdyansk axes, taking defense positions at captured territories, while shelling detected Russian targets, and carrying out counter-battery countermeasures.

In the temporarily occupied settlement of Maloyanisol' of the Donetsk Oblast, the deployment of russian unit was noted.
