2023 Counteroffensive Force
Thomas C. Theiner reported 10 June 2023 that "this brings Ukraine's offensive power to 35 brigades." All eight brigades - plus the newly formed ninth volunteer brigade "Khartiya" - will be under the command of the defense forces during offensive operations. "Of the 35 brigades Ukraine prepared for offensive so far only two are in the fight: 37th Marines Brigade and 47th Mechanized. The brigades like the 68th Jaeger and 129th Territorial Defense, which are currently liberating villages, aren't part of the offensive... they are following the 37th Marines and liberating villages on the flanks of the 37th's advance. And brigades like the 3rd Assault & 59th Motorized aren't part of the offensive, but using russia's lack of reserves to overrun russian positions in their sector."
According to freely available information, Ukraine equipped and trained at least 10-12 new brigades. Some of them were armed with Western, more modern weapons. As of early 2023 a total of 22 existing brigades had been reorganized, and the formation of 12 new brigades was being completed.
