Air to Surface Missiles

NATO uses so-called "Reporting Names" when referring to missiles of Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China. Reporting names for aircraft are selected by the ASIC (Air and Space Interoperability Council; renamed in 2005 from ASCC, Air Standardization Coordinating Committee - member states are Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA and UK), but names for missiles (and other systems like radars etc.) are created by other organizations.

Public knowledge of the nomenclature taxonomy was reasonbly good during the Cold War, but in subsequent years things have pretty much gone to the bow-wows. The fine folks over at Designation Systems [Andreas Parsch et al] gave up once they got to the AS-21, but numbers up through AS-29 are reasonbly well attested, and more recently some sources have reported numbers as high as AS-37. This is all very tedious, and no dispositive disposition seems possible. So many missiles, so little time.
