Project 1123.3 / 1123M - "Kiev"

A third antisubmarine cruiser of project 1123.3, christened Kiev, was planned for construction. "Condor" could be not two, but three ships. "Kiev" (order S-703 ) - an unconstructed Soviet anti-submarine cruiser - the helicopter carrier (RCC) project 1123, the third in the series. It was to be built under the amended project 1123.3 (in some sources 1123M) for the Navy of the USSR. The main task of the ship was to destroy the enemy's nuclear submarines and to provide anti-submarine defense for connecting the ships operating in remote areas.

At the completion of the construction of the main ship of Project 1123 by the decision of the Navy on SPM of June 7, 1967, the Nevsky Design Bureau was assigned to develop a technical project for the project 1123.3 ship for the construction of a third improved design. Nevsky Design Bureau (formerly TsKB-17) received the task to improve the project 1123 to the state of "1123M". The main new requirements for the project were: placement of the Malakhit spacecraft receivers on board; strengthening anti-aircraft weapons; provision of the basis of the VTOL Yak-36M ; creation of six take-off areas on the flight deck; updating of electronic equipment; increase in the overall dimensions of the ship; Increase in the number of cabins of the crew.

The aviation part of the project was to be corrected: on the flight deck it was necessary to fit six take-off areas, and also to provide the possibility of operating Yak-36 vertical take-off and landing aircraft. In accordance with the updated project, at least one anti-submarine cruiser was going to be built. The project ship 1123M was planned to be called "Kiev".

The composition of aviation weapons did not change at the same time. The ship's hull was extended by 12 meters [about 40 feet] and increased by a width of 1 meter. The displacement was increased by 2,000 tons. In addition to the remaining rocket weapons, two close-range DSA "Osa", 2x2 76-mm AU AK-726, TA and RBU units were added The same. The ship was named "Kiev". The ship's designation was scheduled for February 20, 1968.

During the design process it would turn out that 14 helicopters can't provide 24-hour patrols of the search zone. Not for nothing did the third draft in Project 1123.3 had enlarged dimensions and more helicopters. According to available information, "Kiev" would have large dimensions in comparison with its predecessors. In addition, the flight deck, unlike the "Moscow" or "Leningrad" could be in the stern and middle of the ship, above its left side, as on aircraft carriers.

With a displacement of about 17,280 tons full "Kiev" could transport and use at least 20 aircraft and helicopters for various purposes. It also provided for the installation of anti-ship missile systems and the strengthening of antiaircraft weapons. The design was 188 meters long at the waterline, and 201 meters [from 614 feet to 653 feet] long overall, with a width of 35 meters.

The bookmark was held on February 20, 1968. By this time, the Nikolayev shipbuilding plant No. 444 already had a berth and several bottom sections of the hull. Nikolaev shipbuilders began to collect metal structures, but at the very beginning of September, a new order came: to stop work. Project 1123M too far departed from the original concept of anti-submarine cruiser helicopter carrier and approached the appearance of a full-fledged aircraft carrier with an appropriate tactical niche.

The Navy did not see any need for it. For this reason, the leadership of the Ministry of Defense and the shipbuilding industry decided to give the slip of the Nicholas plant No. 444 for the construction of a new aircraft carrier, which was supposed to be developed in the near future. So there was a project of aircraft-carrying cruisers 1143 "Krechet". The main ship of the new project received the name intended for the cruiser "1123M" - "Kiev". The new cruiser with the air group had twice the displacement and had other tasks. Since the updated cruiser helicopter carrier, by its tactical characteristics, approached the aircraft carrier, in September 1968 the construction was cancelled.

In 1968 the TsKB17/Nevskoye bureau began to revise the Project 1123.3 design of the third Moskva ASW cruiser, which transitioned into the workup of the Project 1143.0 (1970): Kiev class carrier. Later the name passed to the main ship of Project 1143 "Krechet" TAVKR "Kiev".
