ZBD-97 - Service Dynamics

According to Russian media reports, from 2006 the Chinese army began to install ZBD-97 infantry fighting vehicles, though the first batch was small. This vehicle was seen for the first time public display in the October 1, 2009 National Day military parade. Its equipment for the Chinese army was a major event, to gradually improve the motorcycle firepower infantry unit firepower.

While the Chinese army has been equipped with a number of SBD-97 infantry fighting vehicles, there are no accurate figures, though by one estimate, in order to ensure the supply to the Chinese army, at least 500 had already been produced by 2010. As the Chinese army is large, it means that only a small number of cutting-edge troops were deployed in the forefront of the latest weapons and equipment, the rest of the troops are still using the old weapons and equipment, and regularly updated to extend the use of the period.

From the end of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century, in more than ten years China carried out a series of large-scale landing military exercises. This fully demonstrated the Chinese army in the new era of construction made great progress, but the problems exposed during the same can not be ignored. Specifically, the overall landing speed of the troops, air multi-level support capabilities and precision strike capability need to be improved.

First of all, from China's existing amphibious landing equipment, China's new amphibious assault vehicle family's water maneuvering capacity could be estimate at greater than 30 km/hr. The ZTS-63A improved water and land tank maneuverability is barely close to the former standard. In models of old-fashioned armored vehicles and other traditional equipment, the water speed is much lower than this standard. It is not difficult to see there is a big gap in the landing of the tank troops. With armored personnel transmission force mobility, it is difficult to achieve in the process of landing operations. The ZBD-97 infantry fighting vehicle should be able to make up for the disadvantages of the old-fashioned infantry fighting / armored vehicle, coordinated with the ZTS-63A improved water and land tank as the second wave of landing attack power.

Second, although China has been equipped with "Thunderstone-6" as the representative of the precision strike ammunition and WZ-10 new armed helicopters, the Chinese army landing force fire support capacity is lacking. Moreover, before obtaining the control of the beachhead position, the ZTZ96 / 99 main battle tanks, PHZ89 rocket launchers and PLZ96 122 mm howitzer and other heavy equipment do not have the water maneuverability. The ZBD-97 can also use the 100mm low-pressure rifled gun to launch anti-tank missiles against enemy tanks or use high-explosive grenades to devastate the enemy's firepower point or foot-knot infantry in the face of a lot of shore firepower and armored vehicles. But the 30 mm sub-gun can effectively combat low-value light armored vehicles and highly threatening air targets. Obviously ZBD-97 this powerful composite attack capability, than only a 30 mm main gun ZBD-86B infantry fighting vehicles are more suitable to support the rapid assault of water and land tanks.

So the ZBD-97 has a strong landing combat capability, and takes into account the traditional infantry fighting tactical characteristics. This is the reason the Nanjing theater and Guangzhou theater ground forces got the first batch of ZBD-97. After all, these two theater areas as a vanguard force and the main force to achieve China's unified operational mission.
