- NORTH KOREA/U-N SECURITY COUNCIL VOA 06 Feb 2003 -- The International Atomic Energy Agency will meet on February 12th to consider how to deal with North Korea's growing nuclear activity. The agency is likely to refer the issue to the U-N Security Council, which could lead to sanctions or other punitive measures against the reclusive, Stalinist state.
- NORTH KOREA - IRAQ FACTOR VOA 06 Feb 2003 -- While the Bush administration's focus on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction has overshadowed the problem posed by North Korea's nuclear program, U-S officials have emphasized their ability to respond to any potential hostile action by North Korea. Presidential spokesman Ari Fleisher declared Thursday, the United States is "very prepared" for any contingencies in North Korea. - NORTH KOREA THREATS VOA 06 Feb 2003 -- North Korea stepped up its war of words with the United States Thursday, warning that any pre-emptive attack on the North's nuclear facilities would trigger a "full-scale war". The comments came as Washington considers increasing its military strength in the Far East in reaction to North Korea's nuclear weapons program.

Mr. Armitage was responding to a statement by the committee's chairman, Republican Senator Richard Lugar, who said direct talks might lead to a non-aggression guarantee, potential commercial relations and urgent humanitarian food and fuel contributions to assist the North Korean people.

- U.S. anti-DPRK international pressure campaign assailed KCNA 06 Feb 2003 -- A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of the DPRK gave today the following answer to the question raised by KCNA as regards the atmosphere of international pressure created by the United States over the DPRK's peaceful nuclear activity: The DPRK is now putting the operation of its nuclear facilities for the production of electricity on a normal footing after their restart. The U.S. is now describing this as "one more act of threatening and blackmailing the international community."
- U.S. begins bolstering its forces in Korean Peninsula KCNA 06 Feb 2003 -- The U.S. imperialists have begun bolstering the huge aggression forces in the Korean Peninsula under the pretext of the nuclear issue, according to KBS and CBS of South Korea. The U.S. Department of Defense is examining a plan to send another aircraft carrier to the waters off the Korean Peninsula as a "show of force." The U.S. imperialists have long had a carrier forward deployed in the pacific region, at a Japanese port, but because of the possibility the carrier, kitty hawk, could be ordered to the Persian Gulf, officials are considering sending another to the Korean region.
- U.S.-proposed "multilateral" talks blasted KCNA 06 Feb 2003 -- Minju Joson today in a signed commentary accuses bush and high-ranking officials of the U.S. administration of asserting that the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula should be settled not through the DPRK-U.S. talks but through "multilateral talks".

- GNP of S. Korea warned not to go reckless KCNA 06 Feb 2003 -- The editorial board of the Seoul-based radio Voice of National Salvation in a written warning sent to the Grand National Party (GNP) on Jan. 27 strongly warned it not to run amuck for pro-U.S. treachery and confrontation with the north, going against the trend of the times and the people's will but disband itself, though belatedly, and stand on the side of the nation and the people.
- DPRK withdrawal from NPT hailed KCNA 06 Feb 2003 -- The Japan Committee for Supporting the Independent and Peaceful Reunification of Korea in an emergency statement on Jan. 21 said that the U.S. moves to stifle the DPRK for no reason failed because it took a resolute countermeasure. DPRK's proposal to conclude a non-aggression treaty with the U.S. is, indeed, the most important issue in ensuring peace and security in the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia at present, the statement said. The committee supports the proposal and hopes that it would be realized at an early date.
