A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that on 03 August 2024, a Ukrainian attack on Crimea highly likely resulted in the sinking of the Russian Black Sea Fleet KILO-Class submarine ROSTOV ON DON. Whilst the attack came in conjunction with a series of drone strikes, the attack in Sevastopol highly likely used the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS).

Contrary to some reporting, the submarine had highly likely not been fully repaired from a previous attack on Crimea in September 2023. This latest attack is almost certainly the final chapter for the submarine with it highly likely being more economically viable to build a replacement submarine than recover and repair it.

Although this is a significant morale boost to the Ukrainian forces, this is highly unlikely to have any major impact on Russian long range maritime strikes into Ukraine from the Black Sea Fleet. The strike does highlight the increasing risks to Russian forces in Crimea and will highly likely force Russia to reconsider any plans to relocate any significant maritime force back to the peninsula.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in total, 68 combat clashes have taken place since the beginning of this day.

East of Toretsk, the Russian breakthrough has continued to expand. Most of Zalizne, Pivnichne, and Niu-York are now under Russian control. Ukrainian forces in eastern Niu-York will have to withdraw to prevent encirclement. Defences here have held since the start of the war. West of Bakhmut, Russia has crossed the canal into the main part of the settlement of Chasiv Yar after previously seizing the district west of the canal. Additional Russian advances also continued west of Avidiivka. It remains to be seen if the new Ukrainian defensive line here can contain the advance. Building on advances from last week, Russian forces seized further trench positions overlooking the settlement of Rozdolivka. Russia has continued to assault the settlement of Kostyantynivka from the south and east. Forward units have now reached the highway to Vuhledar at multiple points. Russian troops have struck Ukrainian positions further north than previously mapped around Robotyne, as such the grey zone has been expanded here. Ukrainian forces raided again over the border. This time from Sumy Ob. into Kursk Ob. where, at one point they managed to reach 7km behind the border.
