A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that on 21 March 2024, Russia conducted its first major Long Range Aviation (LRA) strike against Ukraine in over a month. The strike force included at least 10 Tu-95 BEAR-H aircraft operating from Olenegorsk and Engels airbases as well as MiG-31 FOXHOUND fighters. At least 20 missiles (including Russia's premier AS-23a KODIAK air launched cruise missile and the AS-24 KILLJOY air launched ballistic missile) were launched, targeting locations primarily in Kyiv. It had been 44 days since the previous aviation strike on Kyiv.

It is a realistic possibility that the month-long pause in LRA strikes was due to aircraft fleet management and planning issues. Sanctions have likely restricted Russia's ability to access key components for both aircraft and missiles alike. Continued Ukrainian air defence successes have also likely complicated Russian mission planning.

Russia will almost certainly continue strikes against critical locations as aircraft, crews and weapon stocks allow, attempting to maintain pressure on the Ukrainian government and population via its stand-off strike capability. This is symptomatic of a prolonged campaign where tactical air, such as fighter aircraft and helicopters, continues to have limited impact on the overall conflict.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during the day of March 22, there were 57x tactical engagements.

Russian forces launched a total of 87x missile and 110x air strikes, 39x MLRS attacks on positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Today, Russia has conducted the largest attack lately – in the combined attack the Russian occupiers launched 63 UAVs and 88 missiles of various types. This resulted in power supply problems in a number of regions. Russian forces specifically targeted Ukraine's energy facilities. Unfortunately, the Russian attacks have killed and wounded many civilians. Residential apartment blocks and private houses got destroyed and damaged, civilian infrastructure suffered damage. Measures to overcome the aftermath of the terrorist attack are ongoing.
