A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that on 01 February 2023, Russian Federation Council chair Valentina Matvienko said that regional elections will take place in the newly annexed areas of Ukraine on 10 September 2023.

Incorporating the elections into same day of voting which is scheduled across Russia highlights the leadership's ambition to present the areas as integral parts of the Federation.

This follows continued efforts to 'Russify' the occupied areas, which include revision of the education, communication, and transport systems. While meaningful democratic choices are no longer available to voters at even regional level elections in Russia, leaders will likely make the self-vindicating argument that new elections further justify the occupation.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during the day of February 6, Russian forces launched 5x missile and 12x air strikes. The occupants launched 36x MLRS attacks, including, at civilian targets in Hola Prystan' and Kherson. Russian shells damaged residential buildings, causing civilian casualties.

The threat of further Russian air and missile strikes across Ukraine remains high.

Kherson axis: the vicinities of 12x settlements came under mortar and artillery fire. The affected settlements included Hola Prystan', Zolota Balka, Kachkarivka, Mylove, Antonivka (Kherson oblast), and the city of Kherson.

Russia continues to impose its passports on the residents of the temporarily occupied territories. For example, in the city of Kreminna (Luhansk oblast), employees of the so-called "LPR state-owned enterprises" who are registered to receive a Russian passport are being paid 30% lower wages.

In the temporarily occupied territories of Kherson oblast, the Russian occupiers are intensifying filtration measures. Russian FSB officers arrived in Novotroits'ke to identify the local residents having pro-Ukrainian sentiments.

In order to replenish their manpower losses, the Russian occupiers are also conducting propaganda and agitation work among young people on top of the mobilization. For example, cadet classes with enhanced military training are being created in schools of Skadovs'kyi district (Kherson oblast). The Russian invaders promise that the alleged benefit for the graduates of these classes will be entering contract military service at sergeant positions.

During the day of February 6, the Ukrainian Air Force launched 9x air strikes on the concentrations of the Russian occupiers and 2x air strikes on the positions of anti-aircraft missile systems. In turn, Ukrainian missile and artillery troops hit 2x concentrations of Russian manpower.

The Russian State Duma will consider tomorrow a package of bills on the integration of the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, as well as the Donbass republics, into the Russian legislation on social protection. In particular, the proposals relate to the subsistence level, social support measures for certain categories of citizens, as well as the principles for distributing salaries and pensions to veterans, military personnel and persons with disabilities. In addition, the deputies will consider a government draft that provides for the integration of the rights of citizens of the Russian Federation, foreign citizens and stateless persons living in these regions into the system of compulsory social insurance.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported on the results achieved during the special military operation over the past day. In the Kharkiv region, Russian troops disabled the Ukrainian S-300 anti-aircraft missile system, deployed near the village of Veliky Burluk. In addition, in the vicinity of Dvurechnaya, they managed to destroy the American AN / TPQ-36 counter-battery radar.

In total, the enemy lost about 40 servicemen and two vehicles from Russian artillery strikes on the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the Kupyansk direction. Units of the 103rd Territorial Defense Brigade and the 14th Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were attacked in the districts of Gryanikovka, Sinkovka, Timkovka and Krakhmalny of the Kharkov region, as well as in Novoselovsky of the Luhansk People's Republic (LPR).

Good results were shown by the counter-battery fight in the Kherson direction. The Ukrainian formations lost one Grad multiple launch rocket system, Akatsiya and Gvozdika self-propelled gun mounts, as well as a D-30 towed howitzer. In the Ochakov area of the Nikolaev region, an ammunition depot of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was hit.

A woman died as a result of shelling of the village of Kazinka in the Belgorod region by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This was announced on February 6 by the governor of the region Vyacheslav Gladkov.

Events in Donbass

Active fighting continues in the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics. According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, at least 100 Ukrainian soldiers, 3 armored combat vehicles, 1 Grad MLRS, a Nona S self-propelled mortar and 2 D-20 howitzers were destroyed in the Limansky direction during artillery shelling and the offensive of Russian army units.

The Ministry of Defense confirmed the liberation of Nikolaevka, which had previously been taken by assault detachments of the Wagner PMC. A few days ago, the press service of businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin announced this.

In addition, over the past 24 hours, up to 90 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 2 infantry fighting vehicles, 2 other armored vehicles and a D-30 howitzer have been eliminated in this sector of the front. Also near Constantinople, an enemy ammunition depot and fuel storage were destroyed.

In the South-Donetsk and Zaporozhye directions, the Armed Forces of Ukraine lost over 70 people from the army and territorial defense units. A tank, an infantry fighting vehicle and several enemy guns were put out of action.

Reportedly, the Investigative Committee of Russia took up the study of previously noted cases of the use of poisonous substances by Ukrainian troops in Bakhmut and Vugledar. Donetsk noted that as a result of these incidents, the servicemen felt nauseous, suffered from vomiting and dizziness, but so far there have been no deaths of personnel in Russian units.
