A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that over the last week, Russia has continued to make small advances in its attempt to encircle the Donbas town of Bakhmut.

The M03 and the H32 – the two main roads into the city for Ukrainian defenders – are likely now both threatened by direct fire, following the Russian advances. Earlier in the week, Wagner paramilitary forces highly likely seized a subordinate route which links Bakhmut to the town of Siversk.

While multiple alternative cross-country supply routes remain available to Ukrainian forces, Bakhmut is increasingly isolated.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russia continues to regroup on certain axes. The Russian invaders are focusing their main efforts on offensive operations on Kup'yans'k, Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Novopavlivka axes.

During the day of February 5, Russian occupants launched 4x missile attacks, 2x of which targeted civilian infrastructure in the city of Kharkiv, resulting in the total destruction of a five-storey building of a higher education institution, and injuring 5x civilians. 2x Russian missiles hit the town of Druzhkivka (Donetsk oblast), damaging 4x multi-storey buildings and a kindergarten; 4x civilians sustained injuries of varying severity. In addition, Russian forces launched more than 40x MLRS attacks, in particular, at civilian targets in Kherson. Russian shells damaged residential buildings, killing and injuring civilians.

The threat of further russian air and missile strikes across Ukraine remains high.

Volyn, Polissya, Sivershchyna, and Slobozhanshchyna axes: no changes, Russia continues to maintain military presence in the areas bordering Ukraine, but no Russian offensive groups have been found. The vicinities of settlements of Sen'kivka (Chernihiv oblast), Sopych, Boyaro-Lezhachi, Volfyne, Oleksandrivka (Sumy oblast), Hur'yiv Kozachok, Strilecha, Hlyboke, Krasne, Zelene, Hatyshche, Vovchans'k, Varvarivka, Zemlyanky, and Dvorichna (Kharkiv oblast) were shelled.
Kup'yans'k axis: Russian forces fired at the vicinities of settlements of Ivanivka, Kucherivka, Kyslivka, Kotlyarivka (Kharkiv oblast), as well as Novoselivs'ke, and Stel'makhivka (Luhansk oblast).
Lyman axis: Terny (Donetsk oblast), Makiivka, Ploshchanka, Chervonopopivka, Kreminna, Dibrova, and Terny (Luhansk oblast) came under Russian fire.
Bakhmut axis: Spirne, Berestove, Bilohorivka, Krasna Hora, Bakhmut, Klishchiivka, Kurdyumivka, Ozaryanivka, Zalizne, and New York (Donetsk oblast) came under fire.
Avdiivka axis: Semenivka, Avdiivka, Orlivka, Pervomais'ke, Nevel's'ke, Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Mar'inka, Pobjeda, and Novomykhailivka came under artillery fire.
Novopavlivka axis: Vuhledar, Novoukrainka, Prechystivka, Zolota Niva, and Neskuchne (Donetsk oblast) were shelled with tanks, mortars, and artillery.
Zaporizhzhia axis: more than 20x settlements came under fire. Among them are Novopil', Ol'hivs'ke, Poltavka, Malynivka, Hulyaipole, Charivne, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Stepove, and Kam'yans'ke (Zaporizhzhia oblast).
Kherson axis: Kherson, as well as Zolota Balka, Havrylivka, Kachkarivka, Mylove, Beryslav, Vesele, Mykil's'ke, Antonivka, Dniprovs'ke, and Honcharne (Kherson oblast) were shelled among a total of more than 15x settlements.

Russia continues to attract medical personnel from Russia due to large-scale losses in Ukraine. For example, a field hospital with Russian medical personnel and surgeons has been deployed in Pokrovs'ke (Luhansk oblast), on the territory of a local outpatient clinic.

In the city of Tokmak (Zaporizhzhia oblast), Russian occupation forces are forcibly evicting civilians from their homes to accommodate local collaborators who support the Russian occupation authorities and work within the structure of the Russian's so-called "law enforcement agencies." Owners are ordered to leave their homes and move out into the streets.

The Russian occupiers are searching the village of Krynky (Kherson oblast), to steal boats, water engines, and other equipment for water transportation from civilians.

During the day of February 5, the Ukrainian Air Force launched 9x air strikes on the concentrations of the enemy, while Ukrainian missile and artillery units hit 2x concentrations of Russian manpower and 1x ammunition depot.

Another good news is that starting tomorrow, Ukrainian crews will start their training on the operation of Leopard tanks.

Statements of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that during the previous day, units and places of accumulation of equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kupyansky, Limansky, South-Donetsk and Zaporozhye directions were hit. Air defense systems destroyed 2 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles in the DPR and the Kherson region. 11 shells of multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) "Hurricane" and HIMARS were shot down in the DPR and Zaporozhye region.

The Coordinating Headquarters of the Russian Federation for Humanitarian Response in Ukraine issued an urgent statement, warning that Kyiv was preparing a large-scale provocation in Kramatorsk. In the city, it is planned to blow up the buildings of the narcological and oncological dispensaries, as well as the city hospital, in order to accuse the Russian Federation of "strike" on civilian objects. It is noted that the SBU has already delivered Western media journalists to Kramatorsk to fix the consequences of the provocation.

Zaporozhye region

Maria Lvova-Belova, Commissioner for Children's Rights under the President of the Russian Federation, said that in the Zaporozhye region it is planned to create centers for children under 18 with disabilities, institutions for working with difficult teenagers, as well as an orphanage. Heavy fighting continues for the settlement of Krasnaya Gora north of Bakhmut. According to military correspondent Alexander Simonov, media reports about the alleged liberation of the village are premature, but the Wagner detachments continue their offensive, the Armed Forces of Ukraine suffer heavy losses.
