Ukraine Protests - 18 February 2014

Protests January 2014At least nine people were killed 18 February 2014 as Ukrainian police and protesters fought near the parliament building in Kyiv. Seven civilians died in the violence, along with two police officers apparently killed by gunfire, with hundreds injured, both protesters and policemen. The stun grenades reportedly were a factor in the protesters' deaths. A Defense Ministry spokesperson said the seizure of a military building in the city earlier in the day by protestors would provoke an appropriate response by the military.

Public relations representatives for Ukraine's richest man, key Yanukovych backer Rinat Akhmetov, issued a statement on February 18 saying the Donetsk oligarch "strongly believes that there are no circumstances that would justify the use of force against peaceful citizens."

As of February 18, the Kyiv Metro (subway) had been shut down and access into Kyiv by road was, according to credible reports, restricted. Protesters remained in Kyivs Independence Square and several government buildings in Kyiv and other cities throughout Ukraine. Groups of young men, popularly called titushky, have attacked journalists and protesters and committed other random acts of violence in Kyiv and other cities.
