Yuri Andropov - Assessment

Left without a leader, the "team" of Andropov, some of whose members took important positions in the party and state just two months ago, clearly understood that they had little chance of defeating the old members of the Politburo, old as in a direct, so in a figurative sense. Therefore, at the very first meeting after the death of Yu.V.Andropov, the Politburo meeting unanimously decided to recommend to the Plenum to elect K.U. Chernenko as the new General Secretary of the Central Committee.

Andropov's most significant legacy to the Soviet Union was his discovery and promotion of Mikhail S. Gorbachev. Beginning in 1978, Gorbachev advanced in two years through the Kremlin hierarchy to full membership in the Politburo. His responsibilities for the appointment of personnel allowed him to make the contacts and distribute the favors necessary for a future bid to become general secretary. At this point, Western experts believed that Andropov was grooming Gorbachev as his successor. However, although Gorbachev acted as a deputy to the general secretary throughout Andropov's illness, Gorbachev's time had not yet arrived when his patron died early in 1984.

Around the death of all Soviet leaders - Lenin, Stalin, Brezhnev, and now Andropov - later there were many legends. Some of these legends were born from reports of KGB agents, which are obliged to record not only facts, but also rumors, most often nonsense. In 1992, the physician I. Klemashev published a book entitled The Phenomenon of Andropov. Memoirs and reflections of the attending physician "(Moscow: TsNII, Atomizdat), crowded with many obvious and often ridiculous inventions about Andropov, which Lina Tarkhova repeats in her book" The Kremlin's Hostages". But Andropov never had a personal or "family" doctor. According to the son of Andropov, Ivan Klemashev sometimes appeared in their family until 1972, but in the last ten years of Yu. V. Andropov's life there was no question of Klemashev.

Yuri Andropov - Army General (1976), Hero of Socialist Labor (1974), was awarded four Orders of Lenin, the Orders of the October Revolution, the Red Banner, three Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, medals.

In order to perpetuate the memory in the homeland of Andropov - Nagutskaya station, its bust is installed, and in the capital of Karelia the city of Petrozavodsk - a monument, in Moscow, Petrozavodsk, Yaroslavl - commemorative plaques. His name from 1984 to 1989 was the city of Rybinsk. In 1984, the Krusavsky district of the Stavropol Territory was renamed Andropov (the district has not changed the name since that time). In the name of Andropov the prospectus in the city of Moscow is named. The streets of Andropov are in Yaroslavl, Petrozavodsk and other cities. His name was given to a number of enterprises, organizations, schools, military units.

In 2004, the leadership of the Federal Security Service (FSB) established a scholarship named after Yuri Andropov for cadets, listeners and adjuncts of educational institutions of the FSB of Russia.
