Project 885 / 885M - Armament

Projects 885 and 885M are equipped with a wide range of weapons to destroy all types of surface and underwater targets, as well as delivering strikes against ground targets. The main weapon of the new nuclear submarine is the P-800 Onyx anti-ship tactical complex with the 3M-55 missile (NATO classification SS-N-26 Strobile), which was developed in 1983 at the NPO Mashinostroyeniya under the leadership of General Designer G. A. Efremova. The missile is equipped with an inertial and active radar (at the end of the flight) guidance systems and provides the principle of the use of "shot and forgot." It is designed to destroy both single and group surface targets at distances of more than 300 km (combined trajectory) or up to 120 km (low trajectory) in conditions of strong fire and electronic countermeasures using a penetrating warhead weighing 200 kg.

The Onyx missile algorithm is used in the best way in a group attack, when the missiles can independently recognize targets using the digital classifier database, distribute them among themselves according to the importance level, avoiding the repeated defeat of the same ship with two missiles. The missile is made according to the classical aerodynamic design with a trapezoidal folding wing and plumage. Length - 8.0 m, wingspan - 1.7 m, body diameter - 0.7, starting weight - 3000 kg. The marching 3D-55 SPVRD with a solid-fuel accelerator gives the rocket high maneuverability and a speed of M = 2.5 at an altitude of 14 km and M = 2.0 at an altitude of 10-15 m. When approaching the target, the ASR decreases to 5-15 m. design tests of the complex were carried out in 1987 from a boat of project 06704 "Berkut" and a small missile ship of project 12347 "Roll".

On the boat, Onyx anti-ship missiles are located in eight vertical silo launchers SM-346 (two rows of 4 launchers each), manufactured by the Obukhov plant, with an internal diameter of mines of 2 m and a height of 10 m, including four transport and launch containers of SM-324 . TPK is mounted in the mines by means of a shock-absorbing platform located at the top of the container, three tiers of elements of the depreciation system and a locking device. The electrical connector for communication with on-board ship preparation and launch equipment is located at the lower end of the transport and launch container. Each TPK is airtight and provides storage of the rocket in a high degree of readiness from its manufacture until the moment of combat use, as well as high operational reliability and control of standstill without being removed from the container. It does not require the supply of working fluids or gases, as well as special microclimate conditions both in storage areas and on board the nuclear submarine. The total ammunition of the anti-ship missiles of the P-800 complex on project 885 is 32 missiles.

Initially, the Yasenya missile system was supposed to include subsonic SKR 3M-10s of the S-10 Grenade 533 mm caliber, which were armed with the previous-generation multipurpose nuclear submarines. They could be launched from torpedo tubes and were a direct analog of the American TFR “Tomahawk”. However, this complex had only a nuclear warhead and, apparently, could not be used from vertical launchers without significant refinement. In addition, for political reasons, at the end of the 1980s, all of the Granat nuclear-powered missile systems were removed from the submarine racks and transferred to the Navy bases for storage. In this regard, in 1986 Novator Design Bureau began developing a deep modification of the Granat complex under the designation S-14 Caliber-PL with 3M-14 TFR (NATO classification SS-N-27 Sizzler) for application high-precision strikes on ground targets both in the coastal zone of the enemy and in the depths of his territory.
