A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during the day of April 12, there were 81x tactical engagements.

Russian forces launched a total of 2x missile and 72x air strikes, 116x MLRS attacks on the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Unfortunately, the Russian attacks have killed and wounded civilians. Residential apartment blocks and private houses, as well as other infrastructure, got destroyed and damaged.

Volyn and Polissya axes: no significant changes. No signs of formation of an offensive group.
Sivershchyna and Slobozhanshchyna axes: Russia maintains its military presence in the Russian areas bordering Ukraine. Russia conducts subversion, continues shelling of Ukrainian settlements from the territory of Russia and increases the concentration of mining operations along the state border of Ukraine. Russia launched air strikes in the vicinities of Sumy (Sumy oblast), Lyptsi, Vovchans'k (Kharkiv oblast). More than 20x settlements, including Pl'okhiv, Yanzhulivka, Semenivka (Chernihiv oblast), Vorozhba, Marchykhyna Buda, Yastrubyne (Sumy oblast), Kozacha Lopan', Strilecha, Zemlyanky (Kharkiv oblast) came under Russian artillery and mortar fire.
Kup'yans'k axis: Russian forces conducted no offensives. However, Russian forces launched air strikes in the vicinities of Kup'yans'k-Vuzlovyi and Kurylivka (Kharkiv oblast). The Russian invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 15x settlements, including Syn'kivka, Petropavlivka, Stepova Novoselivka, Kyslivka (Kharkiv oblast).
Lyman axis: Russian forces did not conduct offensive operations. Russian forces fired artillery and mortars at more than 10x settlements, including Makiivka, Nevs'ke (Luhansk oblast), Terny, Yampolivka, Tors'ke, Zarichne (Donetsk oblast).
Bakhmut axis: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 24x attacks in the vicinities of Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), Verkhn'okam'yans'ke, Spirne, Vyimka, Rozdolivka, Chasiv Yar, Ivanivske, Klishchiivka (Donetsk oblast), where the Russian adversary, using air strikes, attempted to improve its tactical position. Russian forces launched an air strike in the vicinity of Druzhba (Donetsk oblast). More than 10x settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Hryhorivka, Kalynivka, Chasiv Yar (Donetsk oblast).
Avdiivka axis: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 16x attacks in the vicinities of Novokalynove, Novobakhmutivka, Berdychi, Pervomais'ke, Netailove (Donetsk oblast), where Russian forces made attempts to dislodge Ukrainian troops from their positions. Russian forces fired artillery and mortars at around 10x settlements, including Novokalynove, Novobakhmutivka, Semenivka, Netailove (Donetsk oblast).
Novopavlivka axis: the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to block Russian forces near Heorhiivka, Novomykhailivka, Kostyantynivka, Vodyane (Donetsk oblast), where Russian forces made 19x attempts to breach Ukrainian defense. Russian forces fired artillery and mortars at more than 10x settlements, including Heorhiivka, Paraskoviivka, Kostyantynivka, Vuhledar (Donetsk oblast).
Orikhiv axis: Russian forces, with air support, launched 3x attacks on positions of Ukrainian defenders in the vicinity of Staromaiors'ke (Donetsk oblast). Russian forces launched air strikes in the vicinities of Vremivka (Donetsk oblast) and Robotyne (Zaporizhzhia oblast). Around 20x settlements, including Poltavka, Chervone, Bilohir'ya, Novodanylivka, Shcherbaky (Zaporizhzhia oblast), were under Russian artillery and mortar fire.
Kherson axis: Russia does not abandon its intention to dislodge Ukrainian troops from their bridgeheads on the left bank of the Dnipro River. In particular during the day of April 12, Russian forces launched 5x unsuccessful attacks on positions of the Ukrainian troops in the vicinity of Krynky (Kherson oblast). The Russian occupiers fired artillery and mortars at more than 15 settlements, including Tyahynka, Ivanivka, Novotyahynka, Ponyativka (Kherson oblast).

During the day of April 12, the Ukrainian Air Force launched air strikes on 12x concentration of Russian troops, weapons and military equipment, 4x anti-aircraft missile systems. On top of that, Ukrainian air defense forces destroyed 1x Kh-59 guided air-launched missile.

The Ukrainian Missile Forces hit 2x air defense systems, 1x electronic warfare station of the Russian invaders.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that from 6 to 12 April 2023, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in response to the Kiev regime's attempts to cause damage to the Russian oil, gas, and energy facilities have carried out one massive and 47 group strikes by high-precision air-based, sea-based, and ground-based weapons, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles, against the facilities of the fuel, energy, and military-industrial enterprises of Ukraine.

In addition, logistics support bases and temporary deployment areas of AFU Special Operations Forces and foreign mercenaries have been hit.

All the assigned targets have been engaged.

In Kupyansk direction, units of the Zapad Group of Forces improved the situation along the front line during the week, as well as hit manpower and hardware of five AFU mechanised brigades, two Territorial Defence brigades, and two National Guard Brigades near Serebryanka (Donetsk People's Republic), Berestovoye, and Sinkovka (Kharkov region).

In addition, four counterattacks launched by assault groups of 95th air assault and 31st national guard brigades were repelled close to Grigorovka and Terny (Donetsk People's Republic).

The enemy losses were more than 380 servicemen, three tanks, nine armoured fighting vehicles, and 17 motor vehicles.

In the course of the counter-battery warfare, two combat vehicles of Uragan and Grad MLRS, 28 field artillery guns, four Nota and Bukovel-AD electronic warfare stations, as well as three U.S.-made AN/TPQ-50 counter-battery warfare stations have been hit.

In Donetsk direction, the Yug Group of Forces' units captured more advantageous lines and hit four assault, two airmobile, one tank, and nine mechanised brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine close to Andreyevka, Antonovka, Belogorovka, Kleshcheyevka, Kurdyumovka, Selidovo, and Chasov Yar (Donetsk People's Republic).

In addition, 23 counter-attacks launched by assault groups of AFU 46th airmobile, 31st, and 67th mechanised brigades were repelled near Berestovoye, Bogdanovka, Razdolovka, Novomikhailovka, and Krasnoye (Donetsk People's Republic).

The AFU losses amounted to more than 3,000 Ukrainian troops, three tanks, 11 armoured fighting vehicles, 51 motor vehicles, 47 field artillery guns, including 17 Western-made guns, 8 electronic warfare stations, as well as three U.S.-made AN/TPQ-36 and AN/TPQ-50 counter-battery warfare stations.

In Avdeyevka direction, units of the Tsentr Group of Forces continued to advance into the depth of the enemy's defence.

Air strikes, artillery fire, and heavy flamethrower systems hit manpower and hardware of eight brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and repelled 65 enemy counter-attacks close to Novgorodskoye, Novokalinovo, Umanskoye, Pervomayskoye, and Berdychi (Donetsk People's Republic).

More than 2,130 Ukrainian troops, six tanks, 24 armoured fighting vehicles, 51 motor vehicles, and 22 field artillery guns, including three U.S.-made M109 Paladin self-propelled artillery systems and four U.S.-made M777 howitzers have been neutralised during the week.

In South Donetsk direction, units of the Vostok Group of Forces improved the tactical situation along the front line and defeated units of seven AFU brigades and National Guard Brigade near Makarovka, Urozhaynoye, and Ugledar (Donetsk People's Republic).

Three counter-attacks of AFU 58th motorised infantry and 72nd mechanised brigades' assault groups were repelled near Nikolskoye and Novodonetskoye.

The AFU losses were more than 840 Ukrainian troops, two tanks, two armoured fighting vehicles, 25 motor vehicles, and 11 field artillery guns, including five U.S.-made M777 howitzers.

In Kherson direction, units of the Dnepr Group of Forces inflicted fire damage on manpower and hardware of one mountain assault, three mechanised brigades of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, one marine brigade, and two territorial defence brigades close to Rabotino, Mirnoye, Stepovoye, Pavlovka (Zaporozhye region), Mikhailovka, and Novotyaginka (Kherson region).

The AFU losses amounted to more than 335 Ukrainian troops, three tanks, 29 motor vehicles, and 22 field artillery guns, including six U.S.-made M777 howitzers.

Missile Troops, Artillery, and unmanned aerial vehicles of the Russian Groups of Forces have wiped out five French-Italian-made SAMP/T anti-aircraft launchers, one S-300 and one S-125 SAM systems, as well as two P-18 radar stations for detecting and tracking air targets during the week.

Aviation and air defence units shot down one Neptune anti-ship missile, 12 French-made Hammer aerial guided bombs, one U.S.-made JDAM aerial guided bomb, 25 HIMARS and Uragan MLRS projectiles, as well as 1,712 unmanned aerial vehicles.

A total of 21 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine surrendered during the week.

In total, 583 airplanes and 270 helicopters, 20,604 unmanned aerial vehicles, 500 air defence missile systems, 15,761 tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, 1,266 combat vehicles equipped with MLRS, 8,836 field artillery cannons and mortars, as well as 20,910 units of special military equipment have been destroyed during the special military operation.
