A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that on 05 December 2022, multiple open sources reported explosions at Engels Airbase, in Russia's Saratov Oblast, and at Dyagilyaevo airfield near Ryazan, south-east of Moscow. Two Tu-95 BEAR heavy bombers were reportedly damaged at Engels and three people were killed when a fuel tank exploded at Dyagilyaevo.

The causes of the explosions have not been confirmed. However, if Russia assesses the incidents were deliberate attacks, it will probably consider them as some of the most strategically significant failures of force protection since its invasion of Ukraine. The sites are much deeper inside Russia than previous similar explosions: Engels is over 600km from Ukrainian-controlled territory.

Engels is the main operating base of Russia's Long Range Aviation (LRA) within western Russia and is home to more than 30 heavy bombers. These aircraft contribute to Russia's nuclear deterrent and have also frequently been used to launch conventional cruise missiles at Ukraine. The LRA is likely to respond by temporarily moving bombers to dispersal airfields. The Russian chain of command will probably seek to identify and impose severe sanctions on Russian officers deemed responsible for allowing the incident.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russian occupiers continue to carry out full-scale armed aggression against Ukraine, and do not stop striking civilian infrastructure. In the Lyman, Bakhmut, and Avdiivka areas, Russia is concentrating its efforts on the offensive. In other directions, it tries to hold the temporarily captured territories, concentrates its efforts on restraining the actions of units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, carries out engineering equipment of defensive lines and positions, conducts reconnaissance.

Russia does not stop striking and shelling settlements and positions of Ukrainian troops along the contact line. During the day, Russian forces made 4 missile strikes, carried out up to 10 MLRS attacks. It continues to strike critical infrastructure and civilian homes in violation of International Humanitarian Law, the laws and customs of war.

During the day, Russian rocket attacks damaged the civil infrastructure of the settlement of Stepne, Zaporizhzhia oblast.

The threat of missile strikes on the objects of the energy system and critical infrastructure throughout the territory of Ukraine remains in the future.

In the Volyn and Polissya directions, the situation remains without significant changes, no signs of the formation of Russian offensive groups have been detected. Training of enemy units continues on the training grounds of the Republic of Belarus. The Republic of Belarus continues to support the russian federation's armed aggression against Ukraine, providing territory and airspace for launching missile and air strikes.

In the Siversky direction, Russian forces carried out mortar attacks on the settlements of Zapsilya and Myropillya of the Sumy oblast.
In the Slobozhanskyi direction, the Russian occupiers continue to keep their troops in the border areas of the Belgorod region. Areas of settlements of Strilecha, Ternova, Starytsa, Vovchanski Khutory, Chuhunivka of the Kharkiv oblast were shelled by tanks, mortars, and barrel artillery.
In the Kupyansk direction, Russia is conducting defensive operations on captured lines. It carried out shelling from tanks and the entire range of artillery in the areas of Dvorichna, Kotlyarivka, Tabaivka, Pishchane, Berestove settlements of the Kharkiv oblast; as well as Novoselivske and Stelmakhivka, Luhansk oblast.
In the Lyman direction, Russian forces fired tanks, mortars, barrel and rocket artillery in the areas of the settlements of Makiivka, Ploshchanka and Nevske of the Luhansk oblast; Terny and Lyman of Donetsk oblast.
In the Bakhmut and Avdiivka areas, Russia is concentrating its main efforts on conducting offensive operations. More than 20 settlements were shelled by tanks and artillery of various types, including Verkhnokamianske, Spirne, Soledar, Bakhmutske, Bakhmut, Klishchiivka, Bila Gora, Druzhba, Zalizne, Avdiivka, Vodyane, Pervomaiske, Nevelske, Krasnohorivka, Maryinka, Novomykhailivka Donetsk oblast.
Russia is defending in the Novopavlovsk direction. It carried out artillery and mortar attacks on the areas of Vuhledar, Bohoyavlenka, Prechystivka and Zolota Nyva settlements of the Donetsk oblast.
    In the Zaporozhzhia direction, Russia is trying to improve the tactical position. Fired tanks, mortars and artillery in more than 10 settlements, including Vremivka, Novopil of the Donetsk oblast; Dorozhnyanka, Hulyaipole, Zaliznychne, Stepove and Plavni of the Zaporizhzhia oblast;
In the Kherson direction, Russia is conducting defensive operations, strengthening the grouping of troops. It carried out artillery shelling of areas of settlements bordering the contact line, in particular Osokorivka, Zolota Balka, Dudchany, Bilohrudove of the Kherson oblast and the city of Kherson.

Russian forces suffered losses, so on December 4 in the Zaporizhzhia region, as a result of fire, up to 20 units of Russian military equipment of various types were destroyed, and about 70 occupiers were injured.

On November 30, in the Verkhnyotoretsky district of the Donetsk oblast, the fact of the desertion of servicemen of the Russian occupation forces with weapons from their combat positions was discovered. Among them, 13 out of 21 are persons recruited from prisons. The command of the Russian occupation forces ordered the arrest and liquidation of violators. As of December 5, all deserters have been eliminated.

During the day, the aviation of the Defense Forces of Ukraine carried out 14 strikes on the areas of concentration of personnel, weapons and military equipment, as well as 2 strikes on the positions of Russian anti-aircraft missile systems. Units of the missile troops and artillery of the Defense Forces of Ukraine hit the control post, 2 Russian personnel concentration areas and an ammunition depot within a day.

In the morning, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported on the defeat of all designated targets as a result of a massive strike on Ukraine during December 5th. We are talking about military command and control systems, communication centers, energy facilities, military industry and railway infrastructure, which complicates the transfer of enemy reinforcements.

Also, over the past day, four command posts, three ammunition depots, 83 artillery units and 176 concentration areas of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), as well as the location of foreign mercenaries in Ilyichivka, were hit.

Air defense assets intercepted six enemy drones, 15 rockets and two HARM anti-radar missiles.

Today, local sources in Kryvyi Rih and Ochakiv are reporting Russian missiles hitting strategic facilities and infrastructure. At the same time, two enemy drones were shot down in the Russian Federation on approach to Sevastopol.

The situation in Donbass

During the day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine systematically shelled residential areas of Donetsk, reports of dead and wounded in various areas. Among the victims was a member of the DPR parliament, Maria Pirogova.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Slovyansk, who recorded a video against the background of a local stele and announced that he was at the forefront. The departure was dedicated to the day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Today, stubborn battles took place in the areas of Experienced and Kleshcheevka. The enemy is preparing to advance the Russian units southwest of Bakhmut, fortifying themselves in Chasovoy Yar.
