A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that in recent months, the number of sorties conducted by Russian tactical combat aircraft over Ukraine has reduced significantly. Russian aircraft now probably conducts tens of missions per day, compared to a high of up to 300 per day in March 2022.

Russia has now lost over 60 fixed-wing aircraft in the conflict, likely including an additional Su-24M FENCER fighter-bomber and a Su-25 FROGFOOT ground attack aircraft last week.

The decrease in sorties is likely a result of continued high threat from Ukrainian air defences, limitations on the flying hours available to Russian aircraft, and worsening weather. With Russia's ground attack tactics largely reliant on visual identification and unguided munitions, the Russian air force will likely continue a low rate of ground attack operations through the poor winter weather.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during the current day, violating the norms of International Humanitarian Law, the laws and customs of war, the Russian occupiers launched a massive missile attack on civilian infrastructure throughout the territory of Ukraine. In particular, energy facilities in Kyiv, Vinnytsia and Odesa oblasts were hit.

According to preliminary information, more than 60 of the more than 70 missiles that the Russian forces launched today on the territory of Ukraine were shot down by the forces and means of air defense of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. The information is being clarified. In addition, the Russian occupiers do not stop shelling the positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements along the contact line. Aviation is actively used in Donetsk oblast.

In the Volyn and Polissya directions, the situation has not changed significantly, and no signs of the formation of Russian offensive groups have been detected. In order to keep the troops ready for deployment, the deadline for checking the combat readiness of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus has been extended until December 12.

In the Siverskyi direction, the Russian forces fired mortars and barrel artillery at the settlements of Bunyakyne, Oleksandrivka, Loknya and Yunakivka of the Sumy oblast.
In the Slobozhanskyi direction, the Russian forces continues to maintain its troops in the border areas of the Belgorod region. Areas of settlements of Strilecha, Krasne, Morokhovets, Buhruvatka, Hatyshche, Bochkove, Mala Vovcha, Chuhunivka, Bolohivka and Dvorichna of Kharkiv oblast were subjected to Russian fire from mortars and barrel artillery.
Russia is defending in the Kupyansk and Lyman directions. Used operational-tactical and army aviation for strikes near Kislivka, Novoselivka, and Stelmakhivka.
In the Bakhmut and Avdiivka directions, Russia is trying to improve the tactical position by conducting offensive actions. 26 districts of settlements were shelled from the entire spectrum of artillery. Among them are Andriivka, Verkhnyokamianske, Berestovka, Bilohorivka, Bakhmutske, Bakhmut, Klishchiivka, Kostyantynivka, Bila Hora, Druzhba, Avdiivka, Pervomaiske, Nevelske, Krasnohorivka, Maryinka, and Novomykhailivka of the Donetsk oblast. The occupiers carried out airstrikes in the areas of the settlements of Spirne, Verkhnyokamianske, Opytne, Vodyane, Pervomaiske and Nevelske.
Russia is defending in the Novopavlivsk direction. It carried out shelling in the Bohoyavlenka, Vuhledar and Zolota Nyva districts of the Donetsk oblast. Made an airstrike near the city of Vuhledar.
Russia is on the defensive in the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson directions. Artillery shelling of the areas of more than thirty settlements near the contact line was recorded. In particular, Vremivka and Novopil bridges of Donetsk region; Hulyaipilske, Biloghirya, Mali Shcherbaki, Kachkarivka, Mylove, Tyaginka, Tokarivka of the Kherson oblast and the city of Kherson.

Units of the Russian occupation forces continue to commit illegal actions against the civilian population in the temporarily occupied and occupied territories of Ukraine. So, in the city of Starobilsk, Luhansk region, the mobilization of servicemen of the russian occupation forces is being quartered in private houses.

In the village of Olhyne, Kakhovsky district, Kherson oblast, the Russian occupiers continue to export stocks of agricultural products of local agro-enterprises to the territory of the Russian Federation.

Cases of robberies of private houses located in settlements along the left bank of the Dnipro River in the temporarily occupied territory of the Kherson oblast have become more frequent.

Due to significant losses in the units of the Russian occupiers in the Kherson oblast, cases of desertion are noted.

During the current 24 hours, the Air Force of the Defense Forces carried out 5 strikes on the areas of concentration of Russian personnel, weapons and military equipment.

During the day, units of missile forces and artillery of the Defense Forces hit 2 control points, 8 Russian personnel concentration areas and one more important object.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation informed that the confirmed losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) on the line of contact over the past day amounted to more than 220 servicemen, two tanks and 21 pieces of light military equipment.

At the same time, seven enemy command posts, an ammunition depot, 72 artillery units and 193 areas of accumulation of manpower and equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were hit. Two planes, two helicopters, ten drones and two rockets were also shot down.

In addition, an UAV attack on Russian military airfields in the Ryazan and Saratov regions has been officially confirmed. They were intercepted, but the collapsed debris slightly damaged the skin of two aircraft. As a result, three soldiers died, four were taken to the hospital.

According to the sources of military correspondent Alexander Kots, the Soviet Tu-141 Swift was used, which freely crossed hundreds of kilometers of Russian territory.

The response to this action was a massive strike on Ukrainian energy, control and communications facilities throughout the country. All 17 designated targets were hit, and problems with electricity, water and heat supply again intensified in the regions.

The situation in Donbass

The Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to transfer reserves near Bakhmut to contain Russian units. There are street fights in Opytny, the approaches to Kleshcheevka are being stormed, where the Ukrainian 53rd brigade is defending.

Parts of the 57th brigade were involved in strengthening the Bakhmut-Soledar highway, 11 artillery installations were transferred from Pokrovsk by rail. The arrival of a new batch of Czech and German mercenaries is also reported.
