A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that Russia's withdrawal from the west bank of the Dnipro River last month has provided the Ukrainian Armed Forces with opportunities to strike additional Russian logistics nodes and lines of communication.
This threat has highly likely prompted Russian logisticians to relocate supply nodes, including rail transfer points, further south and east. Russian logistics units will need to conduct extra labour-intensive loading and unloading from rail to road transport. Road moves will subsequently still be vulnerable to Ukrainian artillery as they move on to supply Russian forward defensive positions.
Russia's shortage of munitions (exacerbated by these logistics challenges) is likely one of the main factors currently limiting Russia's potential to restart effective, large scale offensive ground operations.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during the current day, the Russian invaders carried out 13 airstrikes on the positions of Ukrainian troops along the contact line; 4 missile strikes on civilian objects in the cities of Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia, the settlement of Zarichne in the Zaporizhzhia oblast, and the city of Kostyantynivka in Donetsk oblast. Also, Russian forces launched more than 10 MLRS attacks on the civilian infrastructure of Kherson, Antonivka and the positions of Ukrainian troops along the contact line.
There is still a threat of missile strikes by Russian forces on the objects of the energy system and critical infrastructure throughout the territory of Ukraine.
In the Volyn and Polissya directions, the situation has not changed significantly, there are no signs of the formation of Russian offensive groups.
In the Siverskyi direction, Russian forces carried out mortar and artillery attacks on the settlements of Hremyach and Hai in Chernihiv oblast and Novovasylivka, Khodyne, Vovkivka, Yunakivka and Zapsilya in Sumy oblast.
In the direction of Slobozhansk, areas of the settlements of Huryiv, Veterynarne, Kozacha Lopan, Vysoka Yaruga, Hlyboke, Ohirtseve, Vovchansk, Bochkove, Budarky and Bolohivka of the Kharkiv oblast were hit by mortars, barrel and rocket artillery.
Russia is defending in the Kupyansk direction. The areas of the settlements of Berestove, Vyshneve, Dvorichna, Kislivka, Kotlyarivka and Tabaivka in the Kharkiv oblast and Novoselivske and Stelmakhivka in the Luhansk oblast were shelled. It also carried out airstrikes near Kislivka and Novoselivske.

In the Avdiivka direction, Russia is trying to improve the tactical position. Objects in the Avdiivka, Vodyane, Krasnohorivka, Maryinka, and Novomykhailivka districts of the Donetsk oblast were hit by artillery fire of various types.
The Russian occupiers are conducting defensive operations in the Novopavlivsk direction. Fired from mortars, barrel and rocket artillery in Vuhledar, Pavlivka and Prechistivka districts of Donetsk oblast. Russian airstrikes were also recorded near Vuhledar.
In the direction of Zaporizhzhia, Russia is strengthening advanced positions and leading the defense. Areas of Vremivka settlements of Donetsk oblast were affected by fire; Dorozhnyanka, Zahirne, Zaliznychne, Orihiv, Novoandriivka, Mali Shcherbaki and Kamianske in Zaporizhzhia and Nikopol and Sholokhove in Dnipropetrovsk oblast.
Russia is defending in the Kherson direction. Artillery shelled settlements located on the right bank of the Dnipro River, in particular, Zolota Balka, Havrylivka, Kachkarivka, Ivanivka, Inhulets, Mykilske, Dar'ivka, Molodizhne, Zelenivka, and Dniprovske of the Kherson oblast. Also, the Russian occupiers do not stop terrorizing the civilian population in Kherson and its suburbs with shelling.
In the settlement of Mykhailivka, located in the temporarily occupied territory of the Zaporizhzhia oblast, the Russian forces, in order to accuse the Defense Forces of Ukraine of destroying civilian infrastructure, set fire to the building of the "Mykhailivske Higher Professional School".
Russian forces continues to suffer losses. Thus, on December 1 of this year, it was confirmed that the area where the Russian forces' manpower was concentrated in the temporarily occupied territory of the Zaporizhzhia region, near the settlement of Kamianske, was damaged by fire. The Russian occupiers lost up to 100 wounded. In addition, on the same day, a Russia helicopter was shot down in the Kupyan district of the Kharkiv oblast.
Between November 30 and December 1, up to 70 bodies of dead occupiers were delivered to the city of Horlivka, Donetsk oblast, as a result of hostilities in the Bakhmut direction.

The units of missile troops and artillery of the Defense Forces hit 5 control points, the position of Russian air defense equipment, 2 ammunition depots, 9 areas of concentration of personnel and military armament and technics and 4 other important Russian forces objects.

Five tanks and 15 units of other military equipment were also destroyed; 11 people surrendered.

During the day, strikes were carried out on objects in the city of Dnipro, as well as on the Zaporizhzhia plant "Zaporozhtransformator", where transformers were assembled and finished products were stored.
