Southern Military District - History

Southern Military District (SOUTH) was formed by 4 October 2010 in accordance with the decree of the President of the Russian Federation (Russian Federation) on 20 September 2010 "On military-administrative division of the Russian Federation" on the basis of the North Caucasus Military District (North Caucasus Military District). It also includes the Black Sea Fleet, the Caspian Flotilla and the 4th Air Force and Air Defense Command.

Currently, the army and the Southern Military District deployed within the administrative boundaries of the two federal districts (South and North Caucasus) in the 12 subjects of the Russian Federation. North Caucasus Military District was established by the decree of the Council of People's Commissars of May 4, 1918 in Stavropol, the Black Sea, Dagestan provinces of the Don, Kuban and Terek. In early August of the same year Squaw management together with the newly-formed formations and units were relocated to Georgia in Dusheti and subordinated to the commander of the Transcaucasian Front. The main events of the second half of 1942 and the first half of 1943 on the Soviet-German front, turned around within the territory of the North Caucasus Military District. There were two great battles: Stalingrad (July 17, 1942 - February 2, 1943), and for the Caucasus (July 25, 1942 - October 9, 1943).

After the end of World War II in the Army for a peaceful transfer of position order of People's Commissar of Defense from July 9, 1945 in the North Caucasus was established three military districts: Don, Kuban and Stavropol. In August 2008, the North Caucasus Military District troops took part in the five-day operation to force Georgia to peace. The limited combat ability of 58th Army units came as a surprise. For the the courage and heroism shown during this operation, the title of Hero of the Russian Federation have been awarded to Major Vetchinov Denis Vasilyevich (posthumously), Lieutenant Colonel Konstantin A. Timerman, Captain Yuri Yakovlev, P., Sergeant Myl'nikov Sergei Andreyevich. The commander of the North Caucasus Military District, Colonel-General Sergei Makarov was awarded the Order of St. George 4th degree, and many of his men for their courage, bravery and selflessness in the performance of military duty, marked the Order of Courage, marks the difference - crosses of St. George IV degree and medals "For courage ".

February 1, 2009 were formed Russian military bases on the territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, which became part of the District.
