Signal Troops of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation

Signal troops are designed to deploy communication systems and provide command and control of troops in peacetime and wartime. They are also entrusted with the tasks of operating systems and automation equipment at control points. In its development, military communications have come a long and difficult path from the simplest sound and visual means for transmitting signals and control commands directly on the battlefield to widely branched multi-channel automated systems capable of providing communication on an almost global scale, both with stationary and mobile objects of the Armed Forces RF on land, on water, under water and in the air.

The day of the military signalman has been celebrated in Russia since 2006 and is timed to coincide with the creation of the special signal troops of Russia in 1919. The outcome of the battle largely depends on the work of these units, since without them it is almost impossible to control the troops. This was clearly proved even on the fields of the Great Patriotic War. For many decades, the enterprises that are today part of the structure of the State Corporation have been developing and manufacturing equipment for the Signal Corps.

The modern signal troops in the Russian army is the common name for the type of special troops of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, which are represented in the ground forces, in the navy and in the air force. The role of information and telecommunication systems in modern warfare is only increasing every year. The level of information support for combat operations today is a critical factor in superiority over the enemy. Therefore, the communications troops need the most advanced developments in science and technology.

Signal Troops are special troops designed to deploy a communications system and provide control over formations, formations and subunits of the Ground Forces in peacetime and wartime. They are also entrusted with the tasks of operating automation systems and means at control points. Signal troops include nodal and line formations and units, units and subunits of technical support for communications and automated control systems, communications security services, courier and postal communications, and others.

Modern signal troops are equipped with mobile, high-reliability radio relay, tropospheric, space stations, high-frequency telephony equipment, voice-frequency telegraphy, television and photographic equipment, switching equipment and special equipment for classifying messages.

The main direction in the development of the signal troops is the creation and equipping of the Ground Forces with means, communication complexes and automated command and control systems for troops and weapons that ensure stable, continuous, operational and covert control of formations, formations and subunits in peacetime, a threatened period and during the conduct of hostilities in the most difficult physical, geographical and climatic conditions. At the same time, special attention is paid to the introduction of a unified command and control system for troops and weapons at the tactical level and equipping the troops with digital means of communication that provide a secure, noise-resistant mode of information exchange from an individual soldier to the unit commander.

The development of signal troops is one of the highest priorities in the army renewal program. According to experts, in terms of its effectiveness, the use of more modern means of control and communication is comparable to a significant increase in the number of combat weapons or an increase in their combat capabilities.
