Project 1914 Zodiac - Marshal Nedelin class - Program

Originally planned for construction of 3 ships, but the fleet included only two - KIK "Marshal Nedelin" and KIK "Marshal Krylov" (built on the changed project 1914.1). The third ship "Marshal Biriuzov", was dismantled on the stocks. The ships were widely used as to provide ICBM testing, and support for space objects. KMC "Marshal Nedelin" in 1998 was removed from the fleet and cut to the metal. KMC "Marshal Krylov" is currently in the fleet and is used for its intended purpose.

The first two sections of Project 1914 was laid at the Baltic Shipyard in accordance with the Resolution of the CC CPSU and the USSR Council of Ministers #577-195 from 16.07.74 g., And the order of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR #00493 from 08.19.74, the then Resolution of the CC CPSU and the Council of Ministers USSR #744-244 on 24/08/77 and of the order of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR #00489 from 09.13.77 was given for construction in the Leningrad Admiralty Association and laid 19 November 1977.

" Baltsudoproekt " created a vehicle that can perform measurements without limitations at sea state 7 points inclusive. A major shortcoming of the ship Project 1914 was perhaps the only one: the increased vibration of the main machines, especially in the cabins in the midship. Many of the officers had gone to sleep on duty, so to sleep on a full or medium speed was sometimes impossible. Once the bulkhead is further strengthened state tests, but it was more of a cosmetic intervention: bulkhead became less noisy, but the vibration remains. Apparently the builders on Project 19141 this was taken into account and, in the opinion of the crew, to "Marshal Krylov" less noisey.

Marshal Nedelin was very actively used, especially in the period from 1987 to 1989. During this time the battle path of the ship "Marshal Nedelin" amounted to almost half way "kids" - the so-called steel projects in 1128 Siberia , 1129 Chukotka. Based on more Soviet plans in 1990. "Marshal Nedelin" became the current repairs to "Dalzavod". It planned a conventional ship repair: diesel engines, navigation equipment, measuring complex part was planning to upgrade computer equipment, but nothing revolutionary. For two months the ship stood on the roads of Vladivostok, where the ship's crew survived the first political reforms, and was then put to the wall "Dalzavod", where it was quickly dismantled and then "proved" that the money from the Navy to no recovery. This was the beginning of the end of the great ship. In 1999, the Command of the Navy Russia, according to the contract with India, gave the order to prepare for his last campaign in the south to the ship "Marshal Nedelin" for dismantling scrap metal.

The last of the Soviet tracking ship was "Marshal Krylov" Project 1914.1. It was founded at the Leningrad Admiralty Association July 22, 1982, launched on 24 July 1987. He joined the Navy December 30, 1989. To a place of permanent basing Vilyuchinsk port the ship arrived in July 1990.

In May 1998, the last ship of the expedition of special purpose was given a new classification and became known as a communication ship.

Ships "Marshal Nedelin" and "Marshal Krylov" were not significantly different from each other. Externally, the difference is immediately struck by the presence in the "Marshal Krylov" radar "Fregat" plant with a modern antenna.

Nikolai Ivanovich KrylovNikolai Ivanovich Krylov (April 29, 1903 – February 9, 1972) was a Russian Marshal of the Soviet Union (from 1962). He was commander of the Strategic Missile Troops from 1963 to 1972.During World War II, was chief of staff of the 62nd Army (1942-1943) and commanded the 5th Army (1943-1945). Following the war, he also commanded the Far Eastern (1947-1953), Leningrad (1957-1960) and Moscow Military Districts (1960-1963).

On 12 October 2014 the Tracking ship (KIK) of the Pacific Fleet (PF) "Marshal Krylov" moved from Kamchatka to Vladivostok port. Soon after the ship arrives at Dalzavod for repair and modernization of the deep, according to the Ministry of Defence. The company would do a lot of work to improve the measurement of the complex ship. This is due to its use during the forthcoming launches of carrier rockets with the under construction new Russian cosmodrome Vostochny. It was also planned that repairs, replacement of household systems, galley equipment, navigator and radio arms, modernization of communication, the medium repair of main and auxiliary engines. Repair and modernization of KMC "Marshal Krylov" will not only extend the life of the ship service, but more intensively apply it in order to ensure military and space activities of the country.

The date 23 February 2015 marked 25 years since the lifting of the Navy Flag on KIK "Marshal Krylov". At the anniversary meeting spaceship commander Boris Kulik summed up: a quarter of a century, "Marshal Krylov" was 150,049.7 miles for 881 running hours, performed more than 40 combat activities and tasks, including search and evacuation of spacecraft "Resource 500" in 1992, providing product launch of "Proton-RBDM-2-Iridium" (1997- 1998 years), state flight tests in the waters of the Pacific ocean ICBM "Topol-M" in 2004, testing SLBM "Bulava" in 2011.

At present, the ship is the only KIK of the eight previously built ships remaining in the ranks of the Russian Navy and able to work with space and intercontinental objects. In the fall of 2018, the ship began sea trials after a deep modernization. According to the press, the command of the Pacific Fleet plans to re-qualify the ship as a ship control center. How the tasks of the fleet, Roscosmos, Strategic Missile Forces will be combined are not reported.

Specialists of the Russian Space Systems (RKS) holding company have begun developing a technical project for the modernization of the Zefir-T complex. It is reported that the modernization of the Zefir-T complex for Marshal Krylov would be carried out by JSC Scientific and Production Association of Measuring Techniques (NPO IT, part of the RKS holding). It was planned by May 2019 to complete the stage of technical design and begin to develop design documentation. earlier the Zephyr-T antennas worked in two modes: manual tracking and software tracking when the flight route was known in advance. After modernization, an auto tracking mode will be added to them, in which the antenna captures the object and accompanies it to the maximum signal.
