Progressive Alliance of Socialists & Democrats
The S&D Group stands for an inclusive European society based on principles of freedom, equality, solidarity, diversity and fairness. The S&D MEPs are committed to fighting for social justice, jobs and growth, consumer rights, sustainable development, financial market reform and human rights to create a stronger and more democratic Europe and a better future for everyone. The S&D Group's priority is to fight unemployment and ensure that societies and markets become fairer. The S&D want to give people back trust in the EU and hope for their future.
The S&D Group voices the goals and concerns of European socialists and social-democrats in the European Parliament. However it also works closely with sister organisations outside the EU institutions: the Party of European Socialists and the Foundation for European Progressive Studies. The S&D Group in the European Parliament is composed of MEPs who belong to national parties which share social-democratic values and are members of the Party of European Socialists. The Party of European Socialists (PES) is politically represented in the European Parliament, in the European Council and Council of Ministers, and in the Committee of the Regions. The European Commission – although an independent, collegiate body – also has several commissioners who are members of PES parties. The Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) is an independent thinktank close to the PES. FEPS encourages the exchange of ideas and new ways of thinking on the social-democratic, socialist and labor scene in Europe.
Party of European Socialists
The Party of European Socialists (PES) brings together 53 Socialist, Social Democratic and Labour Parties of the European Union and neighboring countries. The PES European Parliament 2014 election campaign "will put people at its core and reflect the PES commitment to the common values of democracy, equality, solidarity and social justice. In the run-up to the European elections, the PES will spearhead a ‘common candidate’ campaign to give people a say in who the next European Commission President should be. The PES will provide information and contacts to its member parties and will draft a simple ten point manifesto to ‘frame’ the election."
