European Green Party
The European Green Party is "a political force that's clearly identifiable through our commitment to environmental responsibility, individual freedom, inclusive democracy, diversity, gender equality, global sustainable development and non-violence. Our members are made up of Green parties from European countries (although not necessarily from European Union member states). Our commitment to a more participatory Europe means that we are the first European Party to hold an open primary, the Green Primary, to select our leading candidates for a European election."
The Greens first entered the European Parliament (EP) in 1984. Twenty years later, the initial group of Belgian, Dutch and German politicians has grown to 35 from 11 different countries. Although the Greens made up one of the smallest political groups among the 626 parliamentarians (MEPs), they managed to make their voice heard.
The Greens were the only Europe-wide political group campaigning for European Parliament elections jointly in 2004. Greens from throughout Europe established a pan-European Green Party in February 2004 and agreed to mount a joint EP campaign. In most of the 11 states fielding Green candidates identical campaign posters in the different languages all trumpet green topics: demanding an end to nuclear power, supporting renewable resources and rejecting genetically-modified foods.
