Type 033 Romeo-class submarine - Improvements

The R-class, which is also a medium-sized submarine, had greatly improved its performance compared to the W-class. Although the R-Type is designed on the basis of the W-Type, the design of the R-Type reflected the overall design art and ingenuity of the "Azurite" planning bureau. Among the three major Russian submarine design bureaus, the "Azurite" design bureau is located in the upper reaches of the Volga River in the Mainland. The R-class had many similarities with the W-class boat type structure, sub-cabin arrangement, and selection of major equipment. It seems that these improvements are not worth mentioning today, but they were commendable about half a century ago. There are the following aspects.

1. The R displacement relative to the W-Type was increased by about 300 tons. The power plant realtive to the W-Type was at the same level, the underwater maximum speed remained 13 knots, so it section did not decrease. It can be estimated by the Admiralty coefficients of the R -class and W -class are the same, the maximum underwater speed of the R -class can only reach 12 knots. Don't look at just a few quarters, but sometimes it takes the designer's effort to do so. In order to increase the R -class underwater speed, a ducted propeller was used, which was rare on submarines at that time.

The R -class still used direct flight torpedoes. The torpedo attack of direct flight mines still emphasizes the occupation of a favorable firing position, and the speed plays a large role in occupying the firing position. Soviet submarine designers were most worried about the overall design of the submarine. There are two things: they are afraid that the speed will not meet the requirements specified in the mission statement. Water weight. It is a shame to think that these are not enough in design. Therefore, they always have to leave a little margin in the design speed and put it in the "pocket" of the chief designer. In addition, they would rather be "super light" than "overweight", because "super light" can pressurize iron or use other methods make up the weight. If the boat is overweight, it has a great impact on the design.

2. Increased the number of torpedo tubes and increased the power of torpedo attacks. W stage is the first . 4 tubes, tail 2 tubes, a total of . 6 tubes, and R level is the first . 6 tubes, tail 2 tubes, co . 8 tubes, carrying a total of 14 torpedoes (8 transmit tubes are installed . 8 pieces, spare mine . 6 Mei ) or 28 mines (8 tubes are installed with 16 pieces, the spare 12 is Mei ) . 3. Increased dive depth. W -class pressure hulls are made of SKhP-4 steel, while R-class are made of AK-25 steel. AK-25 has a slightly higher yield strength than the American HY-80 steel. Therefore, the ultimate diving depth of the R-Class reached 300 meters, while the W-Class only 200 meters. Both R and F grades are made of AK-25 steel. The pressure hull is composed of a cylinder and a cone. There is no "8" structure like the W-class, which was beneficial to the structural design and construction.

4. It can carry overloaded fuel, which increases the fuel carrying capacity and improves the endurance and self-sufficiency. The R-Class has a total of 11 main ballast tanks. Only the main ballast tanks No. 1, 10 and 11 have drain holes, and there are no sea valves. The remaining eight main ballast water tanks have sea valves, and the three main ballast tanks No. 4, 7 and 8 ballast tanks are fuel ballast tanks that can be used to carry overloaded fuel. The displacement of the boat when it was overloaded with fuel was 1490 tons, and the average draft increased slightly, about 5 meters. The amount of overloaded fuel is about the same as normal fuel. Therefore, when overloaded, the endurance on snorkel (8 knots ) was 9500 nautical miles, double the normal fuel loading range of 4500 nautical miles. The self-sufficiency of the boat was also increased from 30 days and nights in the W class to 60 days and nights.

5. More importantly, the R-class comprehensively updated the observation, communication and navigation equipment of the boat, using a new generation of products. The "Arctic" sonar station is a comprehensive sound, internal station, including active and passive sonar. The reconnaissance sonar station is a "light-M " type, and there is the MG-15 hydroacoustic communication station , a "Heading-5" gyro , a PR-2 log gauge , an IZP-5 echo sounder , a "Storm" type attack radar, "Surge" type search radar, "Chrome-5" type transponder (friend and foe identifier), also installed an automatic track mapping device and "Leningrad-633" type torpedo firing commander. Except for the "Surge" radar, they are different from those on the W-class, but many are the same as those on the F-class. There is no automatic track mapping instrument on the W-Type.
