Type 051 Luda - Operational Service
As the first guided missile destroyer independently developed by China, Jinan had the most important task of testing. It completed more than 2,000 equipment test tasks in more than 30 years of service and obtained more than 3 million valuable data for subsequent ships. The improvement and stereotyped production provide a reliable theoretical basis and valuable practical experience, and are known as the “opening pioneer of national defense modern equipment experiment”. On January 15, 1983, the Central Military Commission collectively won the first class for the Jinan.
In May 1980, the 051 destroyer participated in the launch test and measurement of the Dongfeng 5 intercontinental missile, salvage recovery and escort missions.

Type 051 guided missile destroyer Nanchang was officially decommissioned as of 08 September 2016, after serving in the Chinese Navy for almost 34 years. Nanchang was China's last active Type 051 destroyer. Type 051 destroyers were China's first generation of domestically-manufactured missile destroyers. The first Type 051 destroyer was commissioned on Dec. 31, 1971, and was later named Jinan. The commissioning of Jinan marked a historic moment for China, as that was when the country became capable of controlling its surrounding seas. Nanchang began to serve in the navy in 1982. Two years later, it sailed and anchored, for the first time, at the southernmost shoal of Zengmu Reef in the South China Sea during a 35-day patrol mission to the Nansha Islands, Navy Today reported. The Type 051 destroyers have since been serving as coastal defense in the Nansha Islands. The decommissioned destroyer was sent back to Nanchang, Jiangxi province, where it became a major tourist attraction at a local military-themed park.

In May 2019, officers and men of a destroyer detachment in the northern theater were neatly lined up at a military port in Lushun to hold a decommissioning ceremony for 4 domestic 051-type missile destroyers. These four destroyers are Kaifeng Ship, Dalian Ship, Zunyi Ship and Guilin Ship. They have served for more than 30 years and have trajectories all over the country's vast seas.
In May 2019, the destroyer flotilla of the navy under the PLA Northern Theater Command held a grand retirement ceremony for four homemade first-generation missile destroyers including the guided-missile destroyers Kaifeng (Hull 109), Dalian (Hull 110), Zunyi (Hull 134) and Guilin (Hull 164) at a military port in Lyushun, Liaoning Province, China. All of the four destroyers had been in service for more than 30 years, leaving footprints in the vast territorial waters of China.
The destroyer Dalian (Hull 110), which had been in service for 34 years, was once awarded the Collective Second-Class Merit. By May 2020 the Chinese military’s last Type 051 guided-missile destroyer Zhuhai (Hull 166) was about to retire and scheduled to settle down in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province of China. The designated receiving unit was arranging for its handover and applying for a provincial themed patriotism education base for it. The destroyer Zhuhai (Hull 166) was commissioned to the South China Sea Fleet under the PLA Navy in 1992. The vessel is a Type 051G2 destroyer with a length of 128.6m, a width of 12.8m, and a draft of 4.6m. The ship’s standard displacement is 3,250t, and full-load displacement 3,670t.
As a diplomatic flagship of the PLA Navy, destroyer Zhuhai (Hull 166) undertook many foreign visit missions in the 1990s and therefore became a flagship destroyer of frequent occurrence at that time. In August 1995, destroyer Zhuhai visited Indonesia to participate in the Indonesian International Fleet Review (IFR); from February 20 to May 28, 1997, a fleet composed of guided-missile destroyers Zhuhai (Hull 116) and Harbin (Hull 112) visited the United States, Chile, Peru, Mexico and other South American countries, and then came to Australia, completing the first round-the-world voyage since the establishment of the PLA Navy.
Over decades, they had effectively fulfilled their sacred duties to safeguard China’s national unity and maritime rights and interests, and made outstanding contributions to the modernization of the Chinese Navy. This model of missile destroyers is the first-generation large and medium-sized warship independently designed and built by China. Their service in the military was of epoch-making significance, marking the rise of China’s modern industry and naval forces. Their decommissioning also had epoch-making importance, indicating that China had quickened its pace of building a strong and modernized military.
