6th Separate Guards The 6th Separate Guards Mechanized Brigade stationed in Grodno was and remains a pioneer in many respects. It was the first such military formation of the Armed Forces of young sovereign Belarus, when on August 1, 1992 it was renamed from the 6th Guards Tank Division with all awards and honorary titles. It was with this military unit that the stage of reforming the Armed Forces soon began. The title of the first is obligatory, and today the Guards Brigade is one of the flagships of the Belarusian ground forces.

Being on the western borders of our Motherland, the soldiers of the 6th Guards Separate Mechanized Brigade daily improve their skills in using weapons and military equipment, professionalism and field training, are in constant readiness to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Belarus.

Being one of the flagships of the Land Forces of the Republic of Belarus, the brigade honorably took part in the complex operational exercises "Neman-2001", "Berezina-2002", "Clear Sky - 2003", "Shield of the Fatherland - 2004", "Autumn-2008", complex operational exercises in 2005 and 2007, complex operational and tactical exercises "Union Shield - 2006", operational and strategic exercises "West-2009", joint operational exercises of the armed forces of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation "Union Shield - 2011", joint strategic exercises armed forces of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation "West-2013", during which the personnel invariably demonstrated high field training, showed professionalism, dedication and boundless devotion to the Motherland.

The illustrious unit, formed on May 25, 1942 on the territory of Ryazan, Tula and Moscow regions as the 12th Tank Corps, passed a heroic combat path stretching over three and a half thousand kilometers, taking part in the Battle of the Kursk Bulge, liberating Ukraine from the Nazi invaders, Poland and Czechoslovakia, the storming of Berlin and the liberation of Prague. For the courage and heroism of the personnel shown in battles with the enemy, the formation was awarded the title of the Guards (June 1943) and the honorary name of Kiev-Berlin (November 6, 1943, June 4, 1945). From July 1943 it became the 6th Guards Tank Corps. The Battle Banner of the brigade is decorated with four high awards: the Order of Lenin, the Red Banner, Aleskandr Suvorov II degree and Bogdan Khmelnitsky II degree.

For the courage and heroism of the personnel shown in battles with the enemy, the corps was awarded the rank of the Guards (July 1943), the honorary names "Kiev" and "Berlin" (November 6, 1943 and June 4, 1945). In July 1943, the compound was renamed the 6th Guards Tank Corps. On his Battle Banner there are four military awards - the Order of Lenin (May 28, 1945), the Order of the Red Banner (November 7, 1945), the Order of Suvorov II degree (August 10, 1944) and the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky (April 3, 1944).

For exceptional feats, courage and bravery, military valor and heroism, 134 soldiers-guards were awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union, four of them - twice. Guard Sergeant Sergei Alexandrovich Gromov, Guard Red Army soldier Nikolai Fedotovich Voloshin and a number of other soldiers became full holders of the Order of Glory. In total, more than 22 thousand people were awarded orders and medals during the years of the Great Patriotic War. The names of five front-line soldiers who, at the cost of their lives, brought the Great Victory over the German fascist invaders nearer to the lists of personnel are forever entered.

The 75th anniversary of the formation was celebrated by the 6th separate guards Kiev-Berlin Order of Lenin, the Red Banner, the orders of Alexander Suvorov and Bohdan Khmelnitsky mechanized brigade on 26 May 2014. On this day, a memorial to the heroes-motorized riflemen was solemnly opened in the military town of Folush. A solemn meeting dedicated to the anniversary of the brigade was held that day at the Yanka Kupala State University. Opening the meeting, the commander of the guard brigade, Colonel Vadim Surov, spoke about the combat path of the formation during the Great Patriotic War, the successes and achievements of the current generation of defenders of the Motherland. Then the military collective was congratulated by the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces - First Deputy Minister of Defense of the Republic of Belarus, Major General Oleg Belokonev, who at one time also commanded this brigade. On behalf of the Chairman of the Grodno Oblast Executive Committee congratulated the guards Managing Director Executive Committee Igor Popov. He noted that today the soldiers of the 6th Separate Guards Mechanized Brigade honor and enhance the military traditions of the generation of victors and reliably ensure the peace and security of our Motherland, and presented diplomas to the best servicemen of the brigade. The ceremony of congratulations and awards was continued by the regional prosecutor, senior adviser of justice Viktor Korzun.

On 27 May 2017, the celebration continued at the brigade's location in the military town of Folush. On the territory of the brigade there was an exhibition of weapons and military equipment, small arms, as well as samples of military uniforms. By tradition, everyone could visit the museum of military glory of the unit and the barracks to get acquainted with the pages of the military history of the guardsmen and the modern conditions of their service.

The guardsmen prepared an exciting and spectacular festive program. The soldiers of the military units and subdivisions of the brigade marched in a solemn march. Numerous spectators greeted them with joy. Then the demonstration performances of the company of the guard of honor of the Minsk military commandant's office of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus, the defile of the military bands of the 6th Guards Mechanized Brigade, military unit 5522 and the Minsk military commandant's office took place. A bright air show with fireworks and elements of dome acrobatics was congratulated by the parachutists of the Grodno Regional Aero Club.

The highlight of the program was the reenactment of one of the first battles of the unit during the Great Patriotic War - the battle near the city of Kozelsk. I also remember the demonstration performances of the reconnaissance soldiers, as well as the brigade's motorized riflemen with reenactments of modern combat. The scouts demonstrated their mastery of hand-to-hand combat and self-defense techniques, showed work with various types of small arms.

The heroic history of the unit, its richest military traditions, is sacredly preserved and enhanced by the current generation of Grodno guardsmen - worthy heirs of the glory of our fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers. Deploying on the western borders of the country, the guardsmen daily improve their skills in the use of weapons and military equipment, professionalism and field training, are in constant readiness to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Belarus.

After the end of the war, the 6th Panzer Corps was reorganized into the 6th Guards Tank Division and became part of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany.
