Digital Topographic Support System-Survey (DTSS-S)
The Digital Topographic Support System-Survey (DTSS-S) is going to be developed as a replacement to the Survey Section of the Topographic Support System (TSS). The DTSS-S will continue to provide the capability to perform first through third order topographic survey missions in a tactical environment, providing horizontal and vertical control, and azimuth data in support of weapons systems and mapping operations. The DTSS-S precision survey assets will provide support across the battlefield, supporting field artillery, air defense artillery, aviation, intelligence, communications, and construction control points. The DTSS-S will also provide unique capabilities for feature data collection and field data editing that can augment the data collection requirements of other DTSS configurations.
Currently the TSS-Survey is housed in an 18 wheel, 30 ft. trailer pulled by a 5-ton standard Army tractor. It is envisioned that the TSS-Survey will be downsized to a HMMWV configuration (four HMMWVs) with standard Army shelter, similar to the DTSS-L. Assets to be included with the DTSS-S are the Automated Integrated Survey Instrument (AISI), Global Positioning System-Survey (GPS-S), a digital level, a laptop/docking station computer to support survey computations, and a large-format, low-volume plotter. Development and production of this system are not yet scheduled.
