Operation Iraqi Freedom - April 13
Day Twenty-Five

As US forces pushed towards Tikrit, a Marine unit recovered seven American POWs. Though several of the soldiers were wounded, none of their wounds were life-threatening. The troops were part of a maintenance unit that was ambushed after taking a wrong turn near Nasiriyah on the fourth day of the war. CENTCOM reports that the POWs were recovered by elements of the 34th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU).

Task Force Tripoli, the Marine unit moving north, met little resistance as it pushed through Samarra and Ba'qubah. Approaching Tikrit from the south, west, and north, Marines entered Tikrit today. Resistance remains light.

No large combat operations occurred in other parts of Iraq. In Northern Iraq, the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) arrived to augment the 173rd Airborne Brigade in efforts to secure strategic sites in the region. CENTCOM spokesmen reported that all major petroleum sites in northern Iraq were under Coalition control.
