Operation Iraqi Freedom - April 10
As US forces consolidated their presence in Baghdad, fighting continued throughout Iraq.
In northern Iraq, a combined US-Kurdish force, including elements of the 173rd Airborne Brigade, entered Kirkuk. CENTCOM also reported that the 173rd had secured 4 gas-oil separation plants and several oil wells. Operations continued to secure the northern oil fields and a military airport near Kirkuk.
Also in northern Iraq, US special operations forces signed a cease-fire agreement with the Iraqi 5th Corps. It was expected that the troops of that command would leave their positions to return to garrison or to return to their homes.
In the greater Baghdad area, US forces entered the Abu Gharib prison complex. Looters ransacked government buildings and palaces throughout the city.
Regimental Combat Team 5, of the 1st Marine Divison, engaged Iraqi forces at the Imam Mosque in southwest Baghdad. 1 Marine was killed and 22 were wounded. It is not known if the historic mosque has been damaged in the engagement.
Elements of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) continued efforts to reduce Iraqi resistance in areas bypassed by the advance of the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized). Units of the 101st conducted attacks against pockets of resistance in the area of Karbala.
The British 1st Armored Division is moving north to effect a linkup with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force.
