GENERAL OVERVIEW: Zelenodolsk became an important military shipbuilder when equipment was evacuated there from the western USSR early in World War II and the yard began building Artillerist-class submarine chasers. After the war, the yard specialized in building submarine chaser and small escort ship classes designed by its collocated design bureau, including the Kronshtadt, SO-1, Poti, and Grisha classes. The Grisha is still in production. Following expansion of the yard in the early 1970s, Zelenodolsk produced the larger escorts of the Koni class, which was intended exclusively for export. The Koni class is likely to be succeeded by the Gepard class, a new design that Russia is now marketing. Zelenodolsk also built the large missile-armed surface effect ships of the Dergach class (designed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau in St. Petersburg), as well as some naval auxiliaries. It has generally also had at least one civilian ship type in production, including Zelenodolsk-class river tugs in the 1950s, Meteor-type passenger hydrofoils (designed in Nizhniy Novgorod) and Caspian Sea trawlers during the 1960s, and 3,700-ton Tatarstan-class refrigerator ships for the fishing industry in the 1970s. It is now seeking additional civil shipbuilding work: it is planning to build tankers for Lithuania, and it expects to receive orders from Kazakhstan to build cargo ships and tankers of up to 5,000 tons displacement. It has also recently begun production of "Linda" class passenger surface-effect ships.

KEY TECHNOLOGIES/EQUIPMENT EMPLOYED: The yard was expanded in the early 1970s, receiving a large new building hall with a launch basin in front. Ships could be rolled out of the hall on two tracks, after which the basin would be flooded and the ships floated out. The result is a modern, all-weather shipbuilding facility capable of handling hulls up to 6,000 tons.

OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION: In 1992 the Zelenodolsk yard began to produce ships of the newly-designed "Linda" class. The "Linda" is a 25-ton surface-effect river passenger ship with a speed of 55 km/h and seating for 70 passengers. It was designed by the Alekseyev Central Hydrofoil Design Bureau in Nizhniy Novgorod to replace the hydrofoils of the "Raketa" class, some of which have been in service for 30 years.

GENERAL OVERVIEW: The Zlatoust plant is a leading producer of submarine-launched ballistic missiles in Russia. It was established when part of the Tula Small Arms Plant was moved to Zlatoust during World War II. Zlatoust also continues to produce small arms today, including heavy machine guns and sporting rifles such as the IZH-60.
