GENERAL OVERVIEW: The Krasnaya Kuznitsa (Red Forge) yard is the main ship repair facility in Arkhangelsk, primarily serving the merchant marine but also doing some repairs on naval ships. In 1993 it is celebrating its 300th anniversary--it was founded in 1693 by Peter the Great on Solombala Island as the first major navy yard ("Admiralty") in Russia. Over the next century and a half it built 481 sailing warships, including 152 line of battle ships and 81 frigates. It was closed in 1862 when most shipbuilding work was transferred to St. Petersburg, but it was reopened in 1887 as a ship repair yard. The yard was privatized in 1992 and, as of September 1992, reportedly no longer received state orders.
