  • KENYA/LAND MINE SUMMIT VOA 29 Nov 2004 -- Diplomats from countries that have signed a treaty banning land-mine use, production, stockpiling, and transfer are assessing the accord's impact at a conference in Nairobi. Several countries have not yet signed the treaty, including the United States, China and Russia. The United States wanted to sign the treaty, but only if an exception were made to allow the continued use of mines to protect U.S. troops in Korea. But officials at the meeting say the agreement has been useful even though it is not universal.
  • World: Activists Gather With Government Delegates At Anti-Mine Summit REF/RL 29 Nov 2004 -- Kenya today officially launched a weeklong international conference toward the goal of eradicating land mines around the world.   • US/UKRAINE/REACT VOA 29 Nov 2004 -- Secretary of State Colin Powell says the United States is pleased that the political crisis in Ukraine, following the disputed presidential election there, has not turned violent and that he is hopeful of a peaceful resolution. Mr. Powell discussed the issue by telephone with outgoing Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
