114th Area Support Group

The mission of the 114th Area Support Group is to deploy to the theater operational area and provide Combat Service Support (rations, water, ice, fuel, ammunition, maintenance, repair parts, transportation, and automation support) to support units. The Group will conduct Reception, Staging and Onward movement of units passing through our assigned area. These tasks involve receiving troops and equipment at airfields, shipping ports, rail yards, moving the troops and equipment to their designated marshalling areas and preparing them to move into combat. The unit will also manage and coordinate with the host nation for additional support.

In addition to the unit's wartime mission, the unit also stands ready at the call of the Governor of Mississippi to provide support during disasters and threats.

Although records are incomplete, it is understood that Battery D, 140th Field Artillery was located in Hattiesburg prior to World War I and was called into active federal service for that war.

It is noted from available records that Captain Joe B. Phillips commanded Battery E, 114th Field Artillery, Hattiesburg, at the time the unit was called into active federal service with the 31st Infantry Division in 1940. CPT Phillips, as a Lieutenant Colonel also commanded the 631st Armored Field Artillery Battalion when it was called into active federal service in 1950. Headquarters Battery of of the 621st Armored Field Artillery Battalion was located in Hattiesburg.

In February 1968, the two National Guard units in Hattiesburg, the 427th Ordnance Battalion and the 5th Howitzer Battalion, 114th Field Artillery were consolidated to form Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 114th Support Group.

On 1 February 1972, Headquarters and Headquarters Company 114th Support Group was reorganized and became Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 114th Support Group (Area). The new designation gave the Group a communications zone mission and increased the authorized strength.
