MAZ-537 "Hurricane" - Specifications

The MAZ-537 was equipped with a four-stroke high-speed V-shaped 12-cylinder diesel engine with a direct fuel injection D-12A-525 with a power of 385 kW (525 hp) at 2100 rpm of the crankshaft and a torque of 2200 Nm (225 kgf-m) at 1000-1400 rpm. Engine D-12A-525, a direct descendant of the famous tank V-2, which was installed on the "Thirty" and other armored and non-armored vehicles, had an aluminum crankcase, a nitrided crankshaft, 4 valves per cylinder, 2 camshafts in the cylinder head, a system lubrication with a "dry" crankcase, a mechanical all-regulator speed control, a tank pre-heater, two-stage air filtration.

The matching gear is a single-row three-shaft gearbox with a mechanism for disconnecting the hydromechanical transmission from the engine (elastic coupling with rubber bushings), power steering pump drives, additional compressor and engine fans and hydromechanical gearbox (gear ratio: 0.867). The transmission includes a single-stage torque converter (four-wheeled, with interlocking pump and turbine wheels), a three-stage planetary gearbox with frictional hydraulic gearing via a spool mechanism (gear ratios: I-3.2, II-1.8, III-1.0; -1.6), a two-stage mechanical transfer box (gear ratios: lower gear - 1.88, higher gear - 1.0). On the 2nd and 3rd gears the torque converter can be blocked. Cardan transmission - eighteen cardan shafts. Leading bridges - with spaced main gear: central conical gear and wheel planetary gear. The total transfer number is 10.82.

The first and second bridges are controllable, with hinges of unequal angular velocities. To increase cross-country ability, the cross-axle differentials of the two front axles are made as mechanisms of increased friction, the two rear axles are self-locking. Interaxle differentials are blocked. All wheels have an unswitched drive. Suspension of front wheelsets independent torsion bar, with hydraulic shock absorbers; rear - non-sprung: the wheels are combined by balancers in pairs in a trolley, articulated to the frame without any elastic element. Wheels - diskless, rim 330-610 (13.00-14), fastened to the hub by pressing on 10 stilettos. In order to increase the carrying capacity, it was decided to abandon the air pressure control system in tires,

Brakes of all wheels are drum type. Working brake system - with pneumohydraulic drive. Parking brake - transmission, mounted on the transfer case, drive - mechanical. The steering mechanism (from MAZ-525) is a screw-ball nut, the transfer ratio is 26.9. Hydraulic booster - piston type, with integrated distributor.

Electrical equipment: voltage 24V; accumulator battery 6STEN-140M (4 pcs.); generator G731; starter C5-30. Windshield wipers have pneumatic drive. On the car there were two sound signals: electric and pneumatic. SSA: with three degrees of freedom; diameter of the lock hole in the grips of the 101 mm pin.

Dynamic characteristics of the tractor considerably increased. The car added up to 21.6 tons of weight, while the load on the SSA was 25 tons, which is 13 tons higher than the load perceived by MAZ-535V. The weight of the towed semi-trailer increased to 65 tons, and the total road train to 87 tons. For the first time in the domestic automobile industry, it was possible to transport heavy undivided cargoes with a mass of up to 50 tons.

At the end of 1958, the first prototypes appeared, which successfully withstood factory, and then state interdepartmental tests. On March 29, 1959, the first truck MAZ-537 of the experimental lot was assembled at the Minsk Automobile Plant, and from the beginning of 1960 serial production of new wheeled tractors MAZ-537 started. July 30, 1962 MAZ-537 was adopted for service. At the end of 1963, design documentation for it was transferred to the Uralselmash plant in the city of Kurgan (renamed the Kurgan Wheel Tractor Plant (KZKT) by the order of the Minister of Automotive and Tractor Industry of June 11, 1966), where before the cars of the MAZ-535 family were manufactured. At that time, the total output of MAZ-537 family cars in Minsk and MAZ-535 in Kurgan reached 350-400 pieces per year.

For the creation of the families of truck-tractors MAZ-535 and MAZ-537 in 1968, the chief designer of the SKB MAZ BL. Shaposhnik and a group of his associates were awarded the State Prize of the USSR.
