MAZ-537 "Hurricane" - Improvement

In parallel with the development of the production of new trucks, great efforts were made to improve their design. A great contribution to improving the reliability of machines, improving their operational and technical parameters was made by Kurgan designers: Vasily Nikitovich Prokopov, Viktor Ageevich Piskarev, Alfred Valentinovich Andris, as well as N.K. Komarov, I.G. Shcherbina, V.A. Lyakhov, V.P. Drygalov, V.A. Antonov, V.N. Shulgin and many others.

One of the first innovations was the replacement of a rather cumbersome inefficient tank pre-engine heater for a compact PZD-600 unit with a heat output of 55,000 kcal / h. In 1965, the air release valve was installed in the filter cover of fine fuel cleaning. In 1968, a flow-through lubrication of the high-pressure fuel pump was introduced, thus eliminating the excess lubrication point, and a year later, ball-type cranes were installed to drain the fuel from the tanks. Since September 1970, the spacer rings of the wheel rims have been abolished, and since February 1973, the stud fastening of the tire on the rim to the lock was changed, making it much easier to dismantle and mount the tire on the rim. In 1971, a large, high-capacity compressor was replaced by two compact "Zilovskie" compressors. In 1972, the cab was changed. In order to improve the convenience of work, in March 1973, a new diaphragm pump was installed in the engine power supply system instead of a manual fuel feed pump. In 1976, modernized electrical equipment, replacing the relay-regulators with more reliable devices with RFI filters.

Many changes in the design of the tractor unit were introduced in 1977. In order to improve the cleaning of the oil in the engine lubrication system, instead of a wire-slit type oil filter, full-flow oil filters with a replaceable filter element were installed. Bellows thermostats replaced with thermostats with solid filler, the power steering system received an oil tank of a modified design.

A lot of criticism in the operation of trucks caused the hinges of equal angular speeds in the driven wheel drive. Designed for the parameters of the tractor MAZ-535, ball joints of the Bendix-Weiss type transmitted a 30% increased torque, which adversely affected their durability. After extensive research and thorough testing, it was decided to replace the CV joints with conventional cardan joints of the "Huka" type with cross-pieces on needle bearings. Since July 1979 such a constructive solution has come in serial production for the entire program of the MAZ-537 production. A year later, the parking brake was modernized, and in 1981 the design of the fuel filter for rough cleaning was changed and instead of two air filters, one high-performance one was installed.

The first batches of MAZ-537, like the MAZ-535 family, had a three-beam headlamp system and side-mounted lamps with double-headed lamps. Soon the middle headlamp (for the PNV) was abolished, and the front lights of the PF-10 were replaced by the PF-101 front position lights, mounted at the edges of the front panel of the cabin. In the late 1960s, ventilation hatches disappeared from it.

Initially, MAZ-535 side doors of the engine compartment hoods had numerous vent holes in the form of vertical holes with flanges. The later lots of these tractors received hoods with five vertical hatches on each side, with adjustable covers. They also inherited the MAZ-537. In the late 1970's, instead of vertical dampers for cooling the engine appeared a large adjustable air intake in the front of the sidewalls, and in the back - two rows of elongated vertical holes.

In the process of production on the wings of the front wheels near the hood of the fuel tanks there are places for attaching fire extinguishers and 20-liter cans for oil and coolant. The other wings were also short, with a slightly noticeable decrease in the second set of wheels and a ladder for climbing to the tanks and the winch (in the trucks of the early issues, the wings had a characteristic lowering between the second and third axes - the "step"). Side on the new wings are the side repeaters of turns UP-101B with diffusers of orange color. The same lights appeared on the roof of the cabin on a special bracket as a sign of the road train.

Rearview mirrors, the trucks of the early series were round on a tubular retractable holder - a typical design for trucks of the 1960s. Cars of late issues got other brackets for fixing the mirror and mirrors themselves, unified with similar products of trucks of the MAZ-500A family.

In the late 1980s MAZ-537 trucks were equipped with new lighting and light-signaling devices. Two-section front lamps appeared on the front wall of the cabin, and three-section rear lights were mounted behind it. All lighting fixtures were supplied with light-weight nozzles, which could be mounted by the consumer himself, depending on the operating conditions. In order to improve the ergonomic parameters of the driver's workplace, the lever switches on the instrument panel have been replaced with more convenient ones - the key type. Since March, 1981 on serial trucks of a tire have been replaced by new - VI-202. Their protector had a more saturated middle part, this solution significantly allowed to increase the warranty mileage and extend the life of rather expensive large-size tires.

Tractors that had undergone major repairs could be equipped with these or other innovations and differed significantly among themselves. On the right of the cab there was a pipe of an independent cabin heater in front, and when the heater was removed, this pipe was also dismantled. Very often the trucks were operated without hoods closing the fuel tanks.

Over time, trucks MAZ-537 began to become obsolete morally and technically. So, most of all complaints were caused by the power plant with low motor resources and small guarantee operating time. After modernization in the early 80's, including the installation of the engine YaMZ-240NM-1B (500 hp), the truck received the designation KZKT-537M (MAZ-537M), and further work to improve the trucks of the MAZ- 537 led to the creation of more advanced tractors of the semester KZKT-7428 Rusich, which in 1990 were replaced by the factory conveyor of honored veterans.
