A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during the day of January 23, Russian forces launched a combined missile attack on Ukraine, using cruise, ballistic, air-launched and anti-aircraft guided missiles. According to the updated information, a total of 44x Russian air attack means were spotted: 4x S-300/S-400 anti-aircraft guided missiles, 15x Kh-101/Kh-555/Kh-55 cruise missiles, 8x Kh-22 missiles, 12x Iskander-M ballistic missiles, 5x Kh-59/Kh-31 guided air-launched missiles. Following combat operations of Ukrainian air defense forces there were destroyed: 15x Kh-101/Kh-555/Kh-55 cruise missiles, 5x Iskander-M ballistic missiles, 2x Kh-59 guided missiles.

During the day of January 23, there were 42x combat engagements. Russian forces launched a total of 81x air strikes, carried out 39x MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Unfortunately, the Russian attacks have resulted in dead and about 100 wounded civilians, including children. High-rise and private residential buildings, schools, a sports complex and other civil infrastructure were destroyed and damaged in Kyiv and Kyiv oblast, Kharkiv and Pavlohrad (Dnipropetrovsk oblast).

The operational situation in eastern and southern Ukraine remains difficult.

Volyn and Polissya axes: no significant changes. No signs of formation of an offensive group. Certain units of the armed forces of Belarus continue their missions in the areas bordering Ukraine.
Sivershchyna and Slobozhanshchyna axes: Russia maintains its military presence in the areas of russia bordering Ukraine. Russia continues its sabotage and reconnaissance activities, shelling Ukrainian settlements from the territory of Russia and increases the density of minefields along the state border of Ukraine. Russian forces launched air strikes near Kozacha Lopan', Hatyshche (Kharkiv oblast). More than 40x settlements came under Russian artillery and mortar fire, including Tymonovychi, Arkhypivka (Chernihiv oblast), Popivka, Atyns'ke, Volfyne (Sumy oblast), Veterynarne, Nesterne, Komisarove (Kharkiv oblast).
Kup'yans'k axis: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 1x assault in the vicinity of Syn'kivka (Kharkiv oblast). In that area Russian forces made attempts to breach Ukrainian defense. The invaders fired artillery and mortars at more than 15x settlements, including Dvorichna, Syn'kivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Berestove (Kharkiv oblast).
Lyman axis: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 4x assaults near Yampolivka, Tors'ke (Donetsk oblast), and 2x attacks near Bilohorivka, Serebryans'ke forestry (Luhansk oblast), where Russian forces made attempts to breach Ukrainian defense. Russian forces launched air strikes in the vicinities of Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), Terny, Serebryanka (Donetsk oblast). Russian forces fired artillery and mortars at more than 10x settlements, including Nevs'ke, Bilohorivka, Serebryans'ke forestry (Luhansk oblast), Tors'ke, Serebryanka, Rozdolivka (Donetsk oblast).
Bakhmut axis: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 2x attacks in the vicinities of Bohdanivka, Klishchiivka (Donetsk oblast), where the Russian occupiers made unsuccessful attempts to improve their tactical situation. Russian forces launched an air strike in the vicinity of Bohdanivka (Donetsk oblast). Around 10x settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Vasyukivka, Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Klishchiivka, Andriivka, New York (Donetsk oblast).
Avdiivka axis: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 4x Russian attacks near Novobakhmutivka, Avdiivka, and 8x more attacks near Pervomais'ke and Nevel's'ke (Donetsk oblast). In that area, the Russian occupiers, with air support, made unsuccessful attempts to breach Ukrainian defense. Russian forces fired artillery and mortars at around 15x settlements, including Oleksandropil', Novobakhmutivka, Ocheretyne, Avdiivka, Pervomais'ke, Netailove (Donetsk oblast).
Mar'inka axis: the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the invaders in the vicinities of Heorhiivka and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast). In that area, the Russian adversary, with air support, made 9x failed attempts to improve its tactical situation. The invaders launched air strikes near Kostyantynivka (Donetsk oblast). The settlements of Krasnohorivka, Mar'inka, Pobjeda, Novomykhailivka, Katerynivka, Yelyzavetivka were under Russian artillery and mortar fire.
Shakhtars'ke axis: Russian forces conducted no offensives. The invaders launched an air strike in the vicinity of Urozhaine (Donetsk oblast). Russian forces fired artillery and mortars at more than 10x settlements, including Vodyane, Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva, Blahodatne, Urozhaine (Donetsk oblast).
Zaporizhzhia axis: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 4x assaults south of Chervone, west of Verbove and Robotyne (Zaporizhzhia oblast), where Russian forces, with air support, made unsuccessful attempts to regain lost ground. More than 25x settlements, including Charivne, Mali Shcherbaky, Stepove, Lobkove, P'yatykhatky, Stepnohirs'k, Plavni (Zaporizhzhia oblast), came under Russian artillery and mortar fire.
Odesa operational-strategic group, Kherson axis: Russian forces launched air strikes near Kachkarivka, Mylove, Beryslav (Kherson oblast). Russian forces fired artillery at the city of Kherson and vicinities of the settlements of Mykhailivka, Sablukivka, Beryslav, Sadove, Antonivka, Stanislav (Kherson oblast), as well as Solonchaky (Mykolaiv oblast). On top of that, Russian forces launched MLRS strikes at the settlement of Ivanivka (Kherson oblast).

The Russian occupiers do not abandon their intention to drive Ukrainian units out of their footholds on the left bank of the Dnipro. Thus, during the day, Russian forces made 7x unsuccessful assaults on positions of Ukrainian troops.

During the day of January 23, the Ukrainian Air Force launched air strikes on 10x concentrations of Russian troops, weapons and military equipment, 2x air defense systems, 1x command post.

The Ukrainian missile troops hit 1x concentration of troops, weapons and military equipment, 2x air defense systems, 9x artillery system and 1x electronic warfare station of the Russian invaders.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that in the morning, the Russian Armed Forces delivered a group strike by high-precision long-range air- and ground- based weapons at Ukrainian military-industrial complex facilities producing missiles and its parts, ammunition, and explosives.

The goal of the strike has been achieved. All the assigned targets have been engaged.

In Kupyansk direction, units of the Zapad Group of Forces supported by aviation and artillery repelled six attacks launched by assault detachments of the AFU 32nd, 66th, and 81st mechanised brigades near Sinkovka, Tabayevka (Kharkov region), and Makeyevka (Lugansk People's Republic).

The AFU losses amounted to up to 45 Ukrainian troops, two motor vehicles, and one Gvozdika self-propelled artillery system.

In Krasny Liman direction, units of the Tsentr Group of Forces supported by artillery improved the tactical situation along the front lines.

Over the past 24 hours, four attacks launched by assault detachments of the AFU 63rd Mechanised Brigade and 5th Ukrainian National Guard Brigade were repelled near Yampolovka (Donetsk People's Republic), Chervonaya Dibrova (Lugansk People's Republic), and Serebryansky forestry.

The AFU losses amounted to more than 220 Ukrainian troops, one tank, four motor vehicles, and two D-20 howitzers.

In Donetsk direction, units of the Yug Group of Forces supported by aviation and artillery inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of the AFU 28th, 58th, and 93rd mechanised brigades, 81st Airmobile Brigade, and 5th Assault Brigade near Kurdyumovka, Grigorovka, and Andreyevka (Donetsk People's Republic).

The AFU losses amounted to more than 280 Ukrainian troops killed and wounded, one tank, two infantry fighting vehicles, six motor vehicles, one D-30 howitzer, and one Anklav-N electronic warfare station.

In South Donetsk direction, units of the Vostok Group of Forces inflicted losses on units of the AFU 79th Air Assault Brigade near Novomikhailovka (Donetsk People's Republic).

The AFU losses amounted to more than 105 Ukrainian troops, seven motor vehicles, and one Akatsiya self-propelled artillery system.

In Zaporozhye direction, units of the Russian Group of Forces supported by aviation and artillery inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of the AFU 65th, 118th mechanised brigades, and 128th Mountain Assault Brigade near Rabotino, Nesteryanka, and Pyatikhatki (Zaporozhye region).

The AFU losses amounted to up to 55 Ukrainian troops, one tank, three pickup trucks, and one D-30 howitzer.

In Kherson direction, as a result of complex strikes at AFU units on the right bank of the Dnepr River, the AFU losses amounted to up to 50 Ukrainian troops, two motor vehicles, and two Gvozdika self-propelled artillery systems.

Operational-Tactical aviation, unmanned aerial vehicles, and Missile Troops and Artillery of the Russian Groups of Forces wiped out one AFU Liman operational-tactical unit command post, as well as engaged manpower and hardware in 147 areas during the day.

Air defence units shot down 56 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles close to Kuzemovka, Nyrkovo, Verkhnekamenka (Lugansk People's Republic), Belogorovka, Kleshcheyevka, Terni, Maryinka (Donetsk People's Republic), Grozovoye (Zaporozhye region), Vinogradnoye (Kherson region), as well as intercepted one HIMARS MLRS projectile.

In total, 568 airplanes and 265 helicopters, 11,089 unmanned aerial vehicles, 451 air defence missile systems, 14,743 tanks and other armoured combat vehicles, 1,205 combat vehicles equipped with MLRS, 7,830 field artillery cannons and mortars, as well as 17,751 units of special military equipment have been destroyed during the special military operation.
