A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that the Russian state is struggling to maintain consistency in a core narrative that it uses to justify the war in Ukraine: that the invasion is analogous to the Soviet experience in the Second World War. On 18 April 2023, Russian state media announced the cancellation of this year's Immortal Regiment 'Great Patriotic War' remembrance marches on 'safety' grounds. In reality, the authorities were highly likely concerned that participants would highlight the scope of recent Russian losses.
This follows Wagner Group owner Yevgeny Prigozhin publicly questioning whether there are actually any 'Nazis' in Ukraine, going against Russia's justification for the war. The authorities have continued attempts to unify the Russian public around polarising myths about the 1940s.
On 12 April 2023, state news agency RIA Novosti reported 'unique' documents from FSB archives, implicating the Nazis in the murder of 22,000 Polish nationals in the Katyn Massacre of 1940. In reality, FSB's predecessor agency, the NKVD, was responsible. Russia's State Duma officially condemned Joseph Stalin for ordering the killings in 2010.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during the day, Russian forces 3 rockets, 24 air strikes and fired about 20 shelling from jet-fire systems. There are casualties and wounded among the civilians, destroyed and damaged private residential buildings and other civilian infrastructures. The probability of missile and air strikes across Ukraine remains quite high.
The Russian forces' main efforts are focusing on the offensive actions in the Bakhmutsky, Avdiiv and Maryinsky directions. About 40 Russian attacks were repelled. The fiercest battles continue for Bakhmut and Maryinka.
In Volyn and Polísʹkomu directions, the operational environment remains without much changes. Designated units of the armed forces of the Republic of Belarus continue to perform their tasks in the border regions with Ukraine.
In the síversʹkomu and slobožansʹkomu directions, within a day, an aviation strike on the settlement of orlikivka of chernihiv region; carried out shelling of settlements ulanove, bruski, stukalivka, wolfine, korenivka, junakivka of sumy region, and timofíivka in kharkiv region.
Novomlinsk, Zapadne, Mas йсьtívka, Sinʹkívka, Kislivka and Brestove Kharkiv region suffered in the Kupyan direction of artillery fire.

In the Marian direction during the day, Ukrainian defenders have repelled numerous Russian attacks in the area of the settlement of Maryinka Donetsk region. At the same time, Krasnogorivka, Georgiyevka, Maryinka, Novomykhaylivka of Donetsk region were subjected to Russian shelling.

Russian occupants continue to intensify the counterintelligence regime in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. Yes, in Enerhodar of Zaporizhzhia region, the number of patrols has increased, at checkpoints began to more meticulously check personal documents and inspect vehicles. Russian occupiers restricted visits to forest areas. Citizens of Ukraine, who have been noticed in these locations, the employees of the FSB RF take control, check their personal data.
At the same time, representatives of Russian intelligence agencies in the city organized a hidden observation of Ukrainian citizens who refused to obtain a Russian passport. They take into account, in particular, the sources of financial income of such citizens. Representatives of the FSB of the Russian Federation are interested in how funds are transferred from the territory of the controlled Government of Ukraine to the temporarily occupied territories of the region and how these funds are converted into cash.
At the same time, due to a critical shortage of skilled workers at the Zaporizhzhya NPP willing to work for the occupiers, Russia has increased psychological and physical pressure on Ukrainian NPP workers. Using intimidation, threats, blackmail and torture, Russia continues to force the latter to obtain Russian citizenship and sign employment contracts with the Russian state-owned corporation "Rosat".
The Defense Forces aviation carried out 8 strikes in the areas of the occupiers' personnel and military equipment in a day, while missile forces and artillery units struck 3 live force focus areas and 1 Russian ammunition warehouse.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that fighting continues along the highway west of Khromovo, and attempts by the Armed Forces of Ukraine to counterattack the positions of Russian units are reported. Detachments of PMC "Wagner" continue fighting in the city of Bakhmut, freeing quarters in the west of the village.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported on 6 sorties and the implementation of 62 fire missions in the Bakhmut direction per day. Attacks were made on the positions of Ukrainian troops in the areas of Bogdanovka and Nikolaevka.
In Kyiv-controlled Chasovoy Yar and Konstantinovka, riots broke out among the military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Yevgeny Prigozhin said. The situation in other directions
DPR
During the day, Ukrainian troops opened fire on Donetsk, Yasinovataya, Vladimirovka and Horlivka. As a result of shelling in Donetsk, residential buildings were damaged, and a direct hit of a shell on a school building was recorded.
Russian forces attacked the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the areas of Ugledar and Vremyevka, the Russian Defense Ministry said. At Pavlovka, the actions of the Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group (DRG) were stopped. In the area of Konstantinovka, a warehouse of missile and artillery weapons of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was destroyed.
There is a positional offensive of the Allied forces east of Novokalinovo in the Avdeevsky direction. To the south of Avdiivka, fighting continues northwest of Vodyanoye, the retreat of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from 2 strongholds is reported.

Zaporozhye region
