A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that while Russia has suffered up to 200,000 casualties since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a significant minority of these have been due to non-combat causes.
On 27 March 2023, a Russian Telegram news channel reported there have been 'extremely high' numbers of incidents, crimes, and deaths linked to alcohol consumption amongst the deployed Russian forces.
Other leading causes of non-combat casualties likely include poor weapon handing drills, road traffic accidents and climatic injuries such as hypothermia. Russian commanders likely identify pervasive alcohol abuse as particularly detrimental to combat effectiveness. However, with heavy drinking pervasive across much of Russian society, it has long been seen as a tacitly accepted part of military life, even on combat operations.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during day of April 4, Russian forces launched 5x missile, 22x air strikes, more than 42x MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and civilian infrastructure in various settlements.
The likelihood of missile and air strikes across Ukraine remains high, as Russia continues to ignore the laws and customs of war, and use terror tactics against civilians. Today, the russian invaders launched 2x missile strikes and massive MLRS shelling that targeted the central part of the city of Kostyantynivka (Donetsk oblast). These criminal actions of the Russian occupiers killed and wounded civilians, damaged a kindergarten, high-rise buildings, and private homes.
Russia continues to focus its main efforts on the offensive operations on Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Mar'inka axes. The towns of Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Mar'inka remain at the epicenter of the fighting. Owing to the heroism and professionalism of Ukrainian soldiers, their skillful and coordinated actions, and effective maneuvering, the units of Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled more than 50x Russian attacks during the day of April 2.
Volyn, Polissya, Sivershchyna, and Slobozhanshchyna axes: no significant changes.
During the day of April 2, Russian forces shelled the settlements of Volfyne, Basivka, Ryasne, Mezenivka (Sumy oblast), Veterynarne, Hatyshche, Velykyi Burluk, and Kolodyazne (Kharkiv oblast).
Kup'yans'k axis: Kam'yanka, Dvorichna, Zapadne, Masyutivka, Krokhmal'ne (Kharkiv oblast), and Novoselivs'ke (Luhansk oblast) came under Russian fire.
Lyman axis: during the day of April 2, Russian forces attempted to advance in the vicinities of Bilohorivka and Verkhn'okam'yans'ke, to no success. Nevs'ke, Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), Tors'ke, Spirne, and Rozdolivka (Donetsk oblast) were shelled with artillery.
Bakhmut axis: Russia has not stopped its assault of Bakhmut. However, Ukrainian defenders are courageously holding the city as they repel numerous Russian attacks. During the day of April 2, the Russian invaders conducted unsuccessful offensive operations in Ivanivske (Donetsk oblast). The Russian forces shelled Vasyukivka, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Hryhorivka, Bohdanivka, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Chasiv Yar, and New York (Donetsk oblast).
Avdiivka and Mar'inka axes: Russian forces conducted offensive operations in the vicinities of Avdiivka, Pervomais'ke, and Maryinka. None of them were successful. The Russian invaders shelled the settlements of Avdiivka, Orlivka, Tonen'ke, Netaylove, Krasnohorivka, and Mar'inka (Donetsk oblast).
Shakhtars'ke axis: during the day of April 2, Russian forces shelled Pobjeda, Novomykhailivka, Vuhledar, Prechystivka, and Velyka Novosilka (Donetsk oblast).
Zaporizhzhia and Kherson axes: with no active operations, the Russian adversary was improving its defensive lines and positions. In particular, Russian forces shelled Novopil' (Donetsk oblast), Ol'hivs'ke, Chervone, Hulyaipole, Bilohir'ya, Novoandriivka (Zaporizhzhia oblast), Dudchany, Zmiivka, Beryslav, Vesele, Mykolaivka, Burhunka, Antonivka (Kherson oblast), and the city of Kherson.
The Russian invaders continue to suffer huge losses. In order to replenish them, military units of the Russian federation's armed forces stationed in the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea are actively subjecting their conscripts to an outreach program. The conscripts are told about the need to sign contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense and take part in combat in Ukraine.
During the day of April 2, the Ukrainian Air Force launched 8x air strikes on the concentrations of Russian forces' personnel and military equipment. In the meantime, missile and artillery units hit 1x concentration of Russian manpower, 1x command post, and 2x other important targets.

At the same time, it became known earlier about the elimination of two other "soldiers of fortune" in the area - an Israeli and a Georgian.
During the day, the offensive of the "Wagnerites" continued in the area of Krasny, as well as in the city of Bakhmut. The positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the areas of Vasyukovka, Grigorovka, Orekhovo-Vasilevka, Bogdanovka, and Chasov Yar came under shelling.
