A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that on 09 March 2023, Russia conducted a wave of at least 80 long-range strikes against Ukrainian critical infrastructure. Russia deployed cruise missiles, air defence missiles in a surface-surface role, Iranian one way attack uncrewed aerial vehicles, and an unusually large number of hypersonic air-launched ballistic missiles during the attack.

This was the first major wave of long-range strikes since 16 February 2023 and likely one of the largest since December 2022. Ukrainian officials reported at least 11 civilians killed.

The interval between waves of strikes is probably growing because Russia now needs to stockpile a critical mass of newly produced missiles directly from industry before it can resource a strike big enough to credibly overwhelm Ukrainian air defences.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during the day, Russian aggressors hit 23 avíacíjnih and 4 rocket strikes across konstantinivka and sloviansʹku donetsk region. There are wounded civilians and damaged civilian infrastructure and residential buildings. Also, the Russian invaders conducted 23 shelling from jet systems of bottom fire.

The threat of missile strikes remains significant throughout Ukraine.

Russia does not abandon attempts to exit the administrative border of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The main efforts focus on the conduct of offensive actions in the Limansky, Bakhmutsky, Avdiivsky, Maryinsky and Shakhtar directions.
In Volyn, Polísʹkomu, síversʹkomu and slobožansʹkomu directions operational environment without significant changes. During the day, Russian forces carried out mortar and artillery shelling of the areas of the settlements of Eline Chernihiv region; Znob-Novgorodske, Middle-Buda and Athens Sumy region and Ambarne, Kamyanka, Novomlinsk, Dvoríčna and Western Kharkiv region.
In the Limansky direction, Russia is trying to break through the defense of our troops. Artillery shelling was recorded in particular, near Gryanikivka, Kislivka, Krokhmalny and Brestovy Kharkiv region; Chervonopivka and Bilogorivka in Luhansk region, as well as Dibrova, Spirne, Rozdolivka and Yagidne of Donetsk region.
In the Bakhmut direction, Russia does not stop storming actions - our defenders repelled numerous attacks in the areas of Ivanivske and Bakhmut. Russian shelling suffered, in particular, Vasyukivka, Zaliznyanske, Bakhmut, Ivanivka, Bogdanivka, Grigorivka, White Mountain, Friendship and Iron Donetsk region.
In Avdiivka, Maryinsky and Shakhtar directions, Russian forces made unsuccessful offensive actions in the directions of Kamianka, Avdiivka , Northern, Vodianogo, Pervomaisky, Nevelsky, Krasnogorivka, Maryinka and Novomikhailivka of the Donetsk region. Russian shelling, in particular, was experienced by the areas of Krasnogorivka, Kamyanka, Avdiivka, Vodyane, Maryinka, Georgievka, Novomykhaylivka and Vugledar. Russian invaders have carried out aerozolʹnih grenades of neletalʹnoí Ро action type k-51 in the area of northern, water and nevelʹsʹkogo.
In Zaporizhzhia and Kherson directions, Russian forces led defense actions. The areas of Malinivka, Gulyajpol, Bilogir, Maloya Tokmachka, Gulyaypilsky, Kamyan and Zaporizhzhya Zaporizhya region, as well as Gavrilivka, Dudchan, Kherson, Berislav, Merry, Antonivka, Coastal and Giant Kherson region.

In the settlements of Yasinuvata, Zhdanivka, Khartsizk, Ambroseivka of the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk region in local occupation administrations and houses of culture, the Russian occupation so-called "power" organized the awarding of local collaborators of party tickets of the Russian political party "one Russia".

Statements of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation

During the briefing, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that during the day, as a result of strikes on the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, about 350 Ukrainian servicemen and a large number of military equipment were destroyed.

Operational-tactical and army aviation, missile forces and artillery hit 83 artillery units, manpower and equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 127 districts. In the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), a Ukrainian S-300 anti-aircraft missile system was hit.

Fighter aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces in the DPR shot down a Su-27 of the Ukrainian Air Force. Air defense systems intercepted 9 HIMARS multiple rocket launchers and destroyed 7 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles in the DPR, Kharkiv and Zaporozhye regions.

The Russian Defense Ministry also stated that the United States did not deactivate its biological laboratories located on the territory of Ukraine, despite the statements of the head of the US National Security Council, John Kirby. Kyiv also continues to cooperate with Washington on dangerous pathogens. As Igor Kirillov, head of the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Troops (RCBZ) of the RF Armed Forces, said, Ukraine covers up this activity with attempts to reduce the risks of the spread of infections.

The RCBZ said they have information about more than 100 Ukrainian participants in US biological programs. In addition, over 10 officials of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine are being checked for involvement in their implementation. Kirillov announced some names, among them - the head of the sanitary and epidemiological department of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Serhiy Morgun, his predecessor Serhiy Litovka, head of the Public Health Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine Volodymyr Kurpita, head of the center's reference laboratories Irina Demchishina.

Zaporozhye region

The situation around the Zaporozhye NPP remains tense, said Renat Karchaa, adviser to the general director of Rosenergoatom. According to him, it is largely connected with power lines and the output of generated energy. Not wanting to risk the security of the facility, the Russian side keeps the station "in standby mode," the adviser said. Now the 1st and 3rd reactors are being repaired, the 2nd and 4th have been transferred to the cold shutdown mode, the 5th and 6th have been launched in the hot shutdown mode - this allows generating heat important for ZNPP.

Ukrainian troops shelled Energodar during the day. At least 7 explosions were heard in the area of the industrial zone near the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, Vladimir Rogov, a member of the main council of the regional administration, reported.

Residents of the Melitopol region, who left it at the beginning of the special operation of the Russian Federation, express a desire to return, said the head of the local administration Andrei Siguta. According to him, this includes highly qualified specialists.

DNR

From the beginning of the day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine opened fire on Donetsk, as well as on the settlements of Gorlovka, Golmovsky, Makeevka, Panteleymonovka, Zaytsevo, Yasinovataya, Valeryanovka, Shirokaya Balka. In Zaitsevo, a civilian was wounded as a result of an explosion of an explosive object (HOP). Residential buildings, a gas pipeline and power lines were damaged in Golmovsky and Gorlovka. The mayor of Donetsk, Aleksey Kulemzin, said that a plant of chemical products was damaged during the shelling of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and a woman was injured during the explosion of the ER.

Entrepreneur Yevgeny Prigozhin confirmed reports that Ukrainian troops are preparing a counteroffensive in the Bakhmut direction. He stated that PMC "Wagner" is doing everything possible to prevent this from happening.

Estonian mercenary Ivo Yurak was liquidated near Bakhmut. The former officer of the Estonian Defense Forces participated in the fighting as part of the Ukrainian International Legion.

Acting head of the DPR Denis Pushilin presented awards to Wagner PMC fighters, thanking them for liberating the territories of Donbass and helping civilians. "Musicians" were awarded medals "For Courage", insignia "St. George's Cross" 4th degree and "For Merit to the Donetsk People's Republic" 3rd degree.

According to the Telegram channel "Older Edda", the Armed Forces of Ukraine have been actively advancing in the direction of Chervonopopovka since the morning, the allied forces repulsed the attacks. At the same time, in the Serebryansky Forest, the initiative belongs to the Russian units that are conducting assault operations.

In the Svatovsky district, employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the LPR discovered a cache of weapons and ammunition. An assault rifle, grenades and about 950 rounds of ammunition were seized from the cache.
