PTH85 VN18 85mm self-propelled gun
Self-propelled artillery has the advantage of fast maneuverability, strong firepower, creating a great advantage on the battlefield. In August 2019, Factory Z751 unveiled the PTH85 VN18 self propelled artillery [PTH = Pháo-binh t? hành] gun it had developed - here are some newer photos of the vehicle. This is basically a D44 85mm field gun mounted on a Ural 43206 chassis. The PTH-85 is the second wheeled SPAG after the 105mm PTH-105 (Ural + M101 howitzer). It carries deployable jacks on the side and shell racks near the rear. Shells for the howitzers would be stored on the sides of the trucks.
Plans regarding the development of a 122mm vehicle had been brought up years ago after the PTH-105 was developed but still haven't materialized. PTH85D44-VN18 is one of the newest self-propelled cannons successfully developed by the Vietnamese defense industry on the basis of combining the advantages of two Soviet weapons into one. The 85mm D-44 is classified as an anti-tank gun or a division field gun, produced by Uralmash from the end of World War II until 1953 for the Soviet Red Army. Later, the Soviet Union exported a large quantity of 85mm D-44 artillery to Vietnam for use in the war against the US.
In a mid-2020 report by the People's Army Online newspaper, viewers discovered the unexpected appearance of the new self-propelled self-propelled artillery complex integrated in the country by Vietnam. This is also the first time this artillery has been publicly introduced in close-up. Previously, in 2019, in a QPVN TV report made at the Z751 factory, accidentally glanced through the image of this unique self-propelled gun in Vietnam, the first time people knew about the its appearance. However, until now, the public did not officially know the name of this weapon.
PTH85D44-VN18 self-propelled gun designed and manufactured by Z751 enterprise using Ural-375 6x6 cross-country truck chassis combined with 85mm D44 anti-tank gun. Both types are produced by the (former) Soviet Union. Images in the QPVN 11/8 report of the QPVN channel show that the Ural-375D's cargo box has been replaced by a working floor with a D-44 85mm gun base, with a small cabin in the front that could be a place for ammunition. The function of the 85mm D-44 gun on the ground is against medium and light tanks with a maximum range of 15.65km, effective (against tanks) is 1.15km, rate of fire 20 shots / min. , angle of elevation of barrel -7 to +35 degree. the 85mm D-44 is equipped with a large rapid-armor piercing bullet HVAP BR-365P that can penetrate 100mm thick armor at a firing range of 1,000 meters with a 90-degree angle or the BR-367P. 180mm thick at a distance of 1,000m, angle of touch 90 degrees.
