December 27, 2019, Vietnamese Navy signed a contract to build a new Roro 5612 multipurpose amphibious transport ship constructed at Song Thu Corporation in Vietnam. This is the fourth Roro 5612 class of the Vietnam Navy that will receive YN541056 number. The RoRo 5612 vessel was already built in Vietnam for the Royal Bahamas defense force. It was launched at Halong Shipyard in Vietnam, July 2019, according to Damen statement.
Da Nang-based shipbuilder, Song Thu Corporation launched on 22 June 2020 the third indigenous 5612 multipurpose landing ship tank for the Vietnam People’s Navy (H?i quân nhân dân Vi?t Nam). The ceremony was held in the company’s shipyard in Da Nang. Song Thu Corporation is a shipbuilder under the General Department of Defense Industry under the Ministry of National Defense. While Vietnamese shipyards have produced these ships in the past for Royal Bahamas defense force, this is the first time the Vietnam People’s Navy had ordered this vessel. It was given the hull number 528, in line with the hull numbering of its sisterships, which were originally built for the Venezuelan Army, but was turned over to the VPN after they failed to pay for the ships.
Additionally, there were currently three extra RoRo 5612 ships built by Vietnam for Venezuela that were never delivered due to the ongoing Venezuelan political/social crisis. A fourth ship of the class was also under construction by Song Thu Corporation. The Ha Long One-member Shipbuilding Co.Ltd., under the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, successfully launched two more troop-carrier ships Roro 5612 numbered 3 and 4 for the Venezuelan Navy on 23 September 2015. The ships, designed and equipped by the Dutch Damen Group, were built for the Latin American country under the supervision of the French register BV.
