Oncilla

The Oncilla (oncilla, a South American feline predator) 4x4 modernized armored personnel carriers [APC] is a joint Ukrainian-Polish development. The debugging process was delayed so that the serial production started only in 2014. As the manufacturer has chosen Lviv armored, in 2020 was released ten copies, which suffered a lot of punch. The adoption took place only in 2020.

The oncilla (Leopardus tigrinus ), also known as the northern tiger cat, little spotted cat, and tigrillo, is a small spotted cat ranging from Central America to central Brazil. It is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, and the population is threatened by deforestation and conversion of habitat to agricultural land. In 2013, it was proposed to assign the oncilla populations in southern Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina to a new species: the southern tiger cat (L. guttulus ), after it was found that it does not interbreed with the oncilla population in northeastern Brazil.

The Oncilla is a light armored personnel carrier produced by Poland-based Mista company and Ukrainian Beryl Design Bureau. The Oncilla project is built based on the Dozor-B armored personnel carrier developed by the Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau (KMDB). The vehicle is equipped with a 12.7 mm machine gun, and the protection package includes, among other things, a double mine-resistant bottom.

The design includes extensive use Western parts, such as diesel engine DEUTZ BF 4M1013FC 190 HP and automatic transmission Allison LCT 1000. Gross weight - kg. 8450 Crew of three. Poland purchased licenses began production of clone called Oncilla 4X4. In the production used the steel armor of the local production. Its maximum thickness was 12 mm. Some cars were sent to Senegal, but most of the nine pieces enrolled in APU. Currently, according to some, neither in Poland nor Ukraine these armored vehicles is no longer manufactured.

The Ukrainian Defense Intelligence directorate (GUR) announced 16 March 2023 that it has received a new Oncilla armored vehicle from Poland. “There are 30 such vehicles already in service. They performed very well on the battlefield, saving lives,” said Viktor Levchenko, a Beryl Design Bureau representative. Officials of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine have expressed gratitude to their Polish counterparts for their assistance. “Special thanks to the Polish company “Trans Select,” which donated funds to purchase Oncilla armored vehicle and other equipment for Ukrainian reconnaissance men,” the message added.

At the beginning of 2019, Mista received the largest and most profitable order for its armored vehicles so far. The Armed Forces of Ukraine, finally disillusioned with the domestic "Dozors-B", decided to purchase a foreign version of this equipment. However, it was reported that the appearance of such an order was facilitated not only by the technical problems of Ukrainian armored cars, but also by commonplace corruption.

Under the terms of the contract, the Polish side had to manufacture and transfer to the customer 24 armored cars in the form of assembly kits. The total cost of such products is approx. UAH 200 million (approx. EUR 6,2 million). The assembly of armored cars from the supplied units was entrusted to NPK VK Sistema. The first deliveries of finished equipment to the armed forces were expected already in 2020.

The foreign armored car, with a similar technical appearance, turned out to be much more expensive than the Ukrainian one. This circumstance indicated obvious corruption processes in the selection and procurement. It seemed that armored cars from the KMDB and Mista can be of interest to the army mainly as a cover for bribes and embezzlements.
