Vilkha / Alder MRL - Design

The Alder-M system is a high-precision 300-mm jet munition with a maximum range of about 110 kilometers. Modernized volley fire system "Alder" -M with corrected missiles caliber 300 mm P624M is designed for long-range destruction of armored, lightly armored and unarmored vehicles, enemy manpower, destruction of command posts, communications, military-industrial structures, ground structures for storage and other purposes.

The Soviet long-range rocket-propelled rocket launcher Smerch / "Tornado" (9K58), which uses rockets of 300 mm caliber with various warheads, is considered one of the most powerful in the world. It is designed to strike at long-range approaches to any group targets, including manpower, armored vehicles of motorized infantry and tank units, artillery units, tactical missiles, anti-aircraft systems and helicopters in the parking lot, the destruction of command posts, communications and facilities military-industrial structure.

The Ukrainian Alder missile has an accuracy an order of magnitude greater than the rockets of the Soviet-made Tornado multiple rocket launcher. After comparing the technical characteristics, this means that each Alder missile at a distance of 70 km hits a circle with a diameter of thirty meters. Or even less.

The control logic for rocket launchers is that the rocket or missile must be stabilized at the initial section of the trajectory and then adjusted at the final. With the launch of "Alder", it is noticeable that when exiting the guide in front of the rocket there is a rapid pulsating flame. This triggers pulse motors. They are needed to keep the rocket steady while it is still accelerating. After all, an eight-meter rocket takes off from the guide at a speed of only 30 meters per second, and this is not enough, or control it with aerodynamics. It can be kept on track only by the reactive power of pulse motors. Therefore, after leaving the guide, the rocket is stabilized by small disposable jet engines. There are 90 such pulse motors. They externally encircle the control unit in several rows. They all work in seconds - much faster than an automatic queue. However, each pulse occurs at the right millisecond, and from the right direction.

The middle part of the rocket's trajectory is uncontrollable. In the third, final part of the flight, power over the "Alder" again takes control. When the rocket begins to descend, the aerodynamic rudders open in front of the rocket. The control system integrates signals from the global satellite positioning system and its own inertial system and forms commands on the steering wheel. The control is performed by the standard method of parallel-proportional approximation. The missile is guided to hit the target.

The new solution from GosKKB Luch also includes equipping combat vehicles with an automated launch system. This significantly reduces the time to enter the necessary data to launch each missile at a specific target, and speeds up the readiness to open fire. It is also significantly simplified to guide a package of 12 missiles to the desired angle of elevation and azimuth. Due to the devices, the gunner moves the package with missiles, focusing on the image on a small protected screen, which indicates the point to which you want to display the position of the package. Compass and other guidance procedures typical of Tornadoes are no longer required. Although they all remain on the car as a backup option for guidance.

The minimum period of MLRS in combat position will contribute to the survivability of the system, upgraded by an automated launch system. Launch of a package of 12 missiles - in 48 seconds. Leaving the start-up area - in 3-4 minutes. The volley occurs without changing the position of the launcher packet.

The mass of the rocket is within 800 kg. Engine weight - within 500 kg. Control system - within 70 kg. The speed of the rocket at the end of the trajectory is in the range of 3.4 M. The weight of the warhead is about 250 kg.

Further improvements can be implemented through the use of modified at the "NGO" Pavlograd Chemical Planttypes of rocket fuel (TSRP subclass 1.1) can increase the mass of the fuel charge by 6%, which will increase the thrust by 18%, which will potentially increase the range by 40% for each of the variants of the product "Alder" (including versions M, M-1 and M-2). This will significantly increase the range of all modifications of the missile complex. The product R-624M "Alder-M" initially had a warhead weighing 170 kg and a range of 123 km, now work is underway to increase the range to 140 km by using a new type of fuel. The new version of the product - R-224M1 "Alder-M1" with a warhead of 170 kg on the old fuel will be able to destroy targets at a maximum distance of 140 km, and when using new fuel - up to 154 km. For this modification, the use of a warhead weighing 236 kg is provided, respectively, the range will be 108 km and 120 km on the new type of fuel. R-224M2 "Alder-M2" will be able to reach a range of 140 km and 200 km with a new type of fuel, while maintaining the warhead weighing 170 kg.
